“The Cotton Patch Gospel,” a musical drama adapted from the books by Clarence Jordan, will be presented by the youth choir and musicians of Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church. Below are the dates and places of the musical drama.

Wednesday, April 17, at 7 p.m. at Gum Spring United Methodist Church, 35 Church Lane, Gum Spring, Va. Admission is free – offering to benefit Randolph-Macon College Habitat for Humanity.

Saturday, April 20, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, April 21, at 3 p.m. at Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church, 201 Henry Street, Ashland, on the campus of Randolph-Macon College. Admission $5 to benefit youth missions and retreats – children 5 and under are free.

Book by Tom Key and Russell Treyz. Music and lyrics by Harry Chapin.

This “Greatest Story Ever Retold” is based on the book “The Cotton Patch Version of Matthew and John” by Clarence Jordan in which the Gospel is presented in a setting of rural Georgia with country music songs, the final and perhaps best work of Harry Chapin. This presentation will adapt the story further to the setting of Central Virginia during the Civil Rights era. Herod is the mayor of Richmond and, inevitably, Christ is lynched by local thugs only to rise again.

Youth and adults will enjoy this foot-stomping, hilarious and yet thought-provoking presentation. A freewill offering will be received at the April 17 show in Gum Spring, suggested donation of $5 per person with all proceeds benefiting the Randolph-Macon College Habitat for Humanity. Tickets for the April 20-21 shows at Duncan Memorial UMC are $5 each with all proceeds supporting the youth ministry of Duncan Memorial UMC. For more information, contact the church at office@duncanmemorialumc.org or (804) 798-7224.
