Obituaries, Week of March 21, 2013: Aigner, Bowles, Harris, Hart, Joyner, Slater, Somers, Stanley and Wolfe


Doris Walker Aigner, 83, of Mechanicsville, formerly of Walkerton, Va., went to be with the Lord Thursday, March 14, 2013. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Thomas E. Aigner Sr.; her children, Brenda Blankinship (Terry), Tammy Caskie (Dan), June Beck (Fred), and Tom Aigner Jr. (Michelle); eight grandchildren, the loves of her life, Walker, Cecily, Gabrielle, Courtney, Lauren, Kyle, Britney and Addison. The family received friends Sunday, March 17, at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Road, where services will be held 11 a.m. Monday. Interment Signal Hill Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mechanicsville United Methodist Church New Foundation Building Fund.


Cecil Henry Bowles, of Montpelier, passed from this life Saturday, March 9, 2013 at the age of 81. He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Jo Anne Willingham Bowles; four children, Kathy Bowles, Tommy Bowles, John Bowles and Bonnie Graube (John); grandchildren, Cali Bowles, Carla Cox (Ryan) and Susan Graube; one great-grandchild, Vivienne Cox, and his loyal canine companion, Newton. After 30 years of service he retired from Sears & Roebuck and was honorably discharged as a 1st SGT. from the Virginia Army National Guard. Cecil valued the simplicity of life and was devoted to his family and home. He loved the outdoors and was happiest when working in his yard and garden. The family would like to thank all of the dedicated caregivers and friends who helped along his journey. A Celebration of his Life was held Wednesday, March 13 at Bliley’s Funeral Home-Staples Mill Road. Burial followed at Dunn’s Chapel Cemetery in Montpelier. Contributions in his memory may be made to St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Ashland or to the Alzheimer’s Association.


Luther T. Harris, Sr., 88, of Glen Allen, passed away Tuesday, March 12, 2013. He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie T. and Alice Louise Harris; a sister, Nettie Harris Murphy and a brother-in-law, James W. Murphy. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Flossie Harris; and one son, Luther T. Harris, Jr. He worked for Friedman-Marks Clothiers for over 35 years. The family would like to thank the staff from Odyssey Hospice for their love and support. The family receives friends Friday, March 15, 2013 at the Nelsen Funeral Home, Reid Chapel, Ashland, where services were held Saturday, March 16, 2013. Burial to follow at the Harris Family Cemetery, Glen Allen.


Evelyn B. Hart, 80, of Ruther Glen died Monday March 18, 2013 in Mary Washington Hospital. She was the widow of William Hart. Survivors include her son, Charles Hart of Woodford; five brothers, Bernard Hart of Woodford, Richard Hart of Woodford, Clyde Hart of Woodford, Robert Hart of Montpelier and John Hart of Doswell. The family received friends at Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green Wednesday. Graveside funeral services were held Thursday, March 21 at 2 p.m. in Bethany Baptist Church Cemetery, Woodford. Rev. Mildred Mabe officiated. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Ladysmith Rescue Squad.


Herbert Thomas “BJ” Joyner, 51, went to be with the Lord March 11, 2013. He was preceded in death by his brother, James R. Joyner Jr. He is survived by his parents, James and Charlsie Joyner; brother, Donald K. Joyner; sisters, Cheryl and Loretta; his life partner, Lynn Harris; sons, Sean Harris, Herbert T. Joyner Jr. and Daniel T. Joyner; many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was a painter by profession. He loved fishing in the James River, where he spent many hours over his lifetime. The family received friends Friday, March 15, at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, followed by memorial services. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Mechanicsville Baptist Church.


George Maxey Slater, 90, of Ashland, died peacefully at home Sunday, March 17, 2013. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Frances Keiter; two sons, Brantley and wife Sandy and Bill and wife Kathy; four grandchildren, Brantley, Emily, Kelly and husband Nolan, and Paige; two step-grandchildren, Lisa and Joey; and two step-great grandchildren, Emma and Colby; and one sister, Anne Wisman. He is predeceased by one brother, Robert Slater; and one sister, Emily Stevens. He was a native of King William County and a veteran of the Army and served in the Pacific during WWII. He was employed by Southern States Cooperative for 37 years. He was a constant presence and beloved member of First Baptist Church, Ashland, where a celebration of his life was held Wednesday, March 20, 2013. A visitation in the Church fellowship hall followed. A private graveside service was held prior to the service. Dennis Keith Somers, 57, went to be with his Lord Feb. 26, 2013. Dennis is survived by his beloved wife, Linda S. Somers of Montpelier; his son, Steven R. Somers and wife Angela A. Somers; four grandchildren, Steven, Kaitlyn, Hunter and Christian of Bumpass; his daughter, Kelly D. Somers of Bluefield, Va.; his niece, Dorrie Gail Bishop and her husband, Justin; and great-nephew, Emory of Midlothian. He is preceded in death by his father, Roy Elwood Somers; his mother, Marian Dempsey Somers; and his sister, Brenda Sias. Dennis was a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church of Montpelier. He had a passion for singing and was a member of the church choir for over 20 years. Dennis and Linda celebrated 37 years of marriage in August of 2012. Memorial services were held Saturday, March 2, 2013 at Shiloh United Methodist Church, 17447 Shiloh Church Road, Montpelier, VA 23192. In lieu of flowers, gifts in Dennis’ memory can be made to the National Kidney Foundation, 30 E. 33rd St., New York, NY 10016 or the West Hanover Rescue Squad, 17005 Beaver Dam Road, Beaverdam, VA 23015.


Elizabeth M. Stanley, 87, of Ashland, passed to her heavenly reward Monday, March 18, 2013. Married for over 61 years, Elizabeth was the devoted wife of the late George Meredith Stanley. She was the loving mother of Margaret B. Johnson and her husband, Clyde; Patricia S. Cook and her husband, Wayne; George D. “Sonny” Stanley and his wife, Janet; William M. Stanley and his wife, Adele; nine (9) grandchildren; twenty one (21) great grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. Elizabeth was a charter member of New Found Church of Christ. During her life, Elizabeth worked various jobs including working in a drug store, a tobacco factory and as a lookout in the Hanover County Fire Towers. Her most important job, however, was serving her Lord. The family will receive friends Saturday from 4-8 p.m. at Bliley’s-Staples Mill, 8510 Staples Mill Road. A Celebration of Elizabeth’s life will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at New Found Church of Christ with interment to follow at Calvary Christian Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to New Found Church of Christ Building Fund, P. O. Box 1399, Glen Allen, VA 23060. Thank you to the Hospice of Virginia for the tender and loving care given Elizabeth during her final days.


Bernice Bryant Wolfe, widow of Benjamin Maxwell Wolfe, passed away March 16, 2013. She is survived by her son, Ronald M. Gilman (Sandra), and her two grandsons, Matthew Bryant Gilman (Claire) and Andrew Vaughan Gilman. Great grandchildren are Perrin Elizabeth Gilman, Laney Vaughan Gilman, and Hilliard Michael Gilman. A life-long member of Independence Christian Church, Bernice was an avid golfer, a charter member of the Hanover Country Club, and a longtime member of the Richmond Women’s Golf Association. Funeral Services were held at Independence Christian Church Wednesday, March 20, 2013, preceded by visitation. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that gifts be made to the Memorials Fund of Independence Christian Church, 14023 Independence Road, Ashland, VA 23005.
