Obituaries, Week of April 11, 2013: Chenery, McDaniel, Meador, Ray, Sharp, and Stultz

Sara Lucille Bradshaw Chenery, went to be with her Lord April 4, 2013. Longtime resident of Bon Air, she was the daughter of Claude Jenkins Bradshaw and Lucille Carson Paulette. Sara was preceded in death by her husband, Alan Jeffries Chenery, Jr. She is survived by her loving family including a sister, Claudia Miller; daughter, Lu Gay Chenery Lanier and husband, Robert; a son, Jeff Chenery and wife, Audie; granddaughter, Cortne Lanier; and grandson, Carl Lanier and wife, Natalie. Sara attended Averett College for two years and received her degree from Longwood College (Class of 1952). Sara was a Charter Member of Salisbury Country Club where she and Al shared their passion for golf with friends. She loved Bon Air and was a regular at Westover Cotillion, the Bon Air Junior Women’s Club and the Bon Air Community Center. Sara loved to share good times with friends and family at their Virginia Beach cottage. A graveside service will be held in Woodland Cemetery, Ashland, Wednesday, April 10, at 1 p.m. The family welcomes you for a reception at the Meadow Event Park following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Lakewood Manor Benevolent Fund. Arrangements by Nelsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

Herman Floyd McDaniel, of Ashland, passed away April 4, 2013. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Grace Cochran McDaniel. He is survived by his wife, Mary Roberts McDaniel; a daughter, Patricia M. Lacy (Thomas); a son, Ronald L. McDaniel (Beth); a granddaughter, Katherine H. McDaniel; a grandson, Matthew N. McDaniel (Katie); and a great grandson, Alexander Daw McDaniel; three stepsons, Michael (Diane), Henry (Terry), and Larry (Cindy) Roberts; several step grandchildren; and two step great grandchildren. He was the youngest of 13 children, born to Alexander Edgar and Ida Shifflett McDaniel. He was also a member of Emmanuel Holiness Church of Montpelier, and a former member of Winn’s Baptist Church. He liked hunting, fishing and gardening. He also played the guitar and harmonica. The family received friends Sunday at the Nelsen Funeral Home, Ashland, where visitation was held Monday, April 8, 2013 with services. Interment was at Westhampton Memorial Park. Paul G. Meador Jr.,  91, of Mechanicsville, passed away Monday, April 1, 2013. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Allinia H. Meador; his daughters and sons-in-law, Sue M. McGann (Bob) and Patricia M. Munn (Wayne); his grandchildren, Lucas Munn (Liz), Lauren Walker (Beau), and Jake Munn; and his brother, Earl F. Meador. Mr. Meador served in the South Pacific during WWII. He was an agent for Southwestern General Life Insurance Company for many years, and was a longtime member of Mechanicsville Presbyterian Church. The family received friends Friday, April 5, 2013 at Mechanicsville Presbyterian Church, Mechanicsville, with services. Interment Forest Lawn. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Mechanicsville Presbyterian Church.

Markayla Sherie Ray On April 2, 2013, God called a sweet little angel home, Markayla Sherie Ray, 5, of Beaverdam. She is preceded in death by her father Mark C. Ray, and grandmother Mary Jean Ray. She is survived by her mother Angela Ray, of Richmond. Sisters Amariana of Beaverdam, and Ebony of Nebraska. Brother Mark Ray, Jr., of Missouri. Grandparents Sheila and Richard Moore of Beaverdam. Grandparents Vanessa and Joseph Lind of New Mexico. Grandfather Earl Ray of Missouri. Great-grandmother Brenda Gayle of Beaverdam. Numerous aunts and uncles, and cousins, and many friends. Memorial services will be held Saturday, April 13 at 2 p.m. at Zion Christian Church, 16158 Beaverdam School Road, Beaverdam, VA 23015. Family and friends will gather following the service. Carl Mason Sharp, 81, a loving and loyal husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and cherished friend, was welcomed home by his Heavenly Father Friday, April 5, 2013. Known for his heartwarming smile and generous heart, he never met a stranger and made you feel welcomed whenever you were in his presence. He was loved by so many and will be missed by all. Born Sept. 18, 1931 in Portsmouth, Va., to Mr. and Mrs. Horace W. Sharp, he was a proud U.S. Army Korean War veteran, he attended Woodrow Wilson High School and after the Korean War, he worked at Dominion Power (Vepco), where he retired after 43 loyal years. Carl was Past Worshipful Master and member of Washington Lafayette Lodge. He also was a member of the Scottish Rite, 32nd Degree, where he earned the Distinguished Rank and Decoration of Knight and Commander of the Court of Honor, passed High Priest of the Port Norfolk Royal Arch Chapter, and a Charter member of the Knights of St. Andrew Scottish Rite, Portsmouth Valley. He was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church for years, and active in the choir until he moved to Glen Allen a few years ago, where he joined New Hanover Presbyterian Church and Bell Choir of his Verena Retirement Community. He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Joan Sharp. He is survived by his daughter, Karen S. Rountree of Mechanicsville; and two sons, Paul J. Sharp of Elizabeth City, N.C., and Mark A. Sharp of Portsmouth, Va. Other survivors include his brother, Robert Sharp of Advance, N.C.; sisters, Frances Ashbacher of Toledo, Ohio, and Katherine Atkinson of Bluffton, S.C.; many beautiful grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Over the years Carl fought the good fight, finished the race and certainly kept the faith (2 Tim 4:7). The family received friends Wednesday, April 10, 2013 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home. Funeral services were held Thursday, April 11, at Cool Spring Baptist Church. Interment with a Masonic Service will be held Friday, April 12, at noon at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens in Suffolk, Va.

Robert “Bob” Stultz, 83, of Mechanicsville, went to be with the Lord April 8, 2013. He is preceded in death by his wife, Edna. He is survived by his son, Bobby; granddaughter, Dawn (Donald); grandson, Justin Bultman; and great-grandchildren, Jocelyn, Chelsey and Aidan; brothers, sisters, and many nieces and nephews. Bob was deeply loved and will be greatly missed. The family received friends Wednesday, April 10 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, where services were held Thursday morning, April 11. Interment Washington Memorial Park.
