Tanna L. Bowman, 50, of Ashland, a loving wife and mother, passed away April 19, 2013. She is survived by her husband of 30 years, James D. Bowman; two children, Amanda L. Bowman (Rickie) and Steven Mercer; two brothers, Robert and Richard Burger; sister, Kelly O’Connor; and loving family members and friends. The family received friends Monday, April 22, 2013, at the Nelsen Funeral Home, Ashland, and where services were held Tuesday, April 23, 2013, with burial in Woodland Cemetery.
John Joseph Cook, Sr., 87, of Mechanicsville, went to rest with his Lord and Savior Sunday, April 21, 2013. John was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert, James and Willie; and one sister, Annie. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Phyllis; son, John Jr. “Junie” (Teresa); daughter, Deborah Melton (Bob); two grandchildren, Brad Melton (Erice) of Jacksonville, Fla., and Tiffany Cook; one great-grandson, Landon Melton of Jacksonville; one sister-in-law, Colleen Oliver; and two devoted family friends, Connie Christian and Judy Lumpkin; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. John was a true southern gentleman. He was a retired Teamsters Truck Driver and a proud Navy World War II veteran. He remained proud of that service until his death. The family received friends Tuesday, April 23, at the Mechanicsville Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, where services were held Wednesday, April 24. Interment Washington Memorial Park.
James Marsh Dooley, Sr., age 83, of Ashland, passed away Wednesday, April 17, 2013. He was born in Wythe County, the son of the late Harry Dooley and Ina Kate Cline Dooley. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patsy Belle Jackson Dooley, two brothers and five sisters. He was retired from First Virginia Bank and was a member of Ashland Presbyterian Church and numerous civic organizations. James is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, James Marsh Dooley, Jr., and Darlene of Ashland; daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer Cole and Peter of Rockville; three grandchildren, James Marsh “Jamie” Dooley, III of Ashland, Christopher Cole of Rockville, and Brook Cole of Rockville; sisters-in-law and spouses, June and Roger Weatherman, Helen Sue and Sanders Neal, Aileen and Glen Ogle, Jean and Martin Crowder, Margie and Harlan Lawson, Sammye and John Lucas. Graveside services were held Monday, April 22, 2013 at the Jackson Family Cemetery with the Reverend Gleasanna Dixon officiating. The family received friends Monday at the Reese Funeral Home. Mary Brannan Loving, 84, passed away Monday, April 22, 2013, after a brief illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd B. Loving. She is survived by her three children, Peggy Vaughan (Robert), Nelson Loving (Kay), and Bill Loving; sister, Audrey Gray; brother, Wesley Brannan, Jr. (Dolly); seven grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. The family received friends Wednesday, April 24, 2013 at the Nelsen Funeral Home, Ashland, VA 23005. Services were held Thursday morning, April 25, 2013 at Independence Christian Church. Edward Thomas (Peter) Luck, 71, went to be with his Lord and Savior Monday, April 22, 2013. He was predeceased by his wife, Isabelle C. Luck and parents, Edward Preston and Ruby Anna Luck. Survivors include two daughters, Tammy L. Hill of Jacksonville, Florida and Patricia L. Coley of Garner, NC.; a son, Edward Thomas Luck, Jr. of Apex, N.C.; two sisters, Lois L. Carneal of Montpelier, and Doris L. Luck (John) of Beaverdam; four grandchildren, Phillip Holtzlander, Sonny Hill, Kayla Rae and Jessica Coley; also, four great grandchildren; a step daughter; a step son; his friend, Lois Cooley; and his beloved dog, “Blackie.” Edward was a retiree of VDOT. He was a lifelong member of Chapel Church of Christ where he served as a deacon for many years. He enjoyed serving in his church, baseball, fishing, gardening and bowling. Growing and providing his delicious Hanover tomatoes for family and his many friends gave him great joy. He was a poet in his own right having several of his poems published. His sense of humor and his love for those around him will long be remembered and missed by all. Visitation was held Wednesday, April 24, 2013 at the Nelsen Funeral Home, Reid Chapel, Ashland. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, April 25, 2013 at Chapel Church of Christ, 16263 Woodman Hall Road, Montpelier. Interment will be in Oak Grove Wesleyan Church cemetery, Montpelier. Estelle Smith Peters, 94, of Richmond, went to be with the Lord April 21, 2013. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Woodrow B. Peters of Richmond. She is survived by her son, Bernard Wayner Peters of Sandston; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was born May 5, 1918 in Nelson County to the late Ohlie Carrington Smith and the late Lena Proffitt Smith. She was a graduate of Amherst High School Class of 1939. Estelle was a faithful member of Broadus Memorial Baptist Church in Mechanicsville. She was a loyal and loving wife and mother, who loved flowers, animals, watching NASCAR races and baseball. She kept children as a babysitter for working parents when she was younger. She was also an accomplished seamstress. The family received friends Wednesday, April 24, at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, where services were held Thursday, April 25. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery.
Rappy L. Price, 86, of Beaverdam, has joined his wife of 60 years, Thelma A. Price, with their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Saturday, April 20, 2013. He is survived by two sons, Robert L. Price (Diane) and James A. Price (Paula); sister, Opal Downing; three brothers, Herb, Max and Lewis Price; six grandchildren, Danielle, Lottie, Elijah, Summer, Arayna and Storm. Rappy served his country in the U.S. Army and was a member of Elon Baptist Church. The family received friends Tuesday, April 23, 2013, at Nelsen Funeral Home – Reid Chapel, Ashland, and where services were held Wednesday, April 24, 2013. James Weldon “Pop” Mitchell, Sr., 78, of Hanover County, departed this life April 11, 2013. Born in June 1934, he spent his entire lifetime in his beloved Doswell. He was a graduate of Henry Clay High School, Class of 1952, and continued his education at the University of Richmond. He retired from the Federal Reserve Bank after 38 years of service. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Emma Flagg Mitchell, his brother, Edward Mitchell, two sisters, Mildred Simms and Joyce Johnson. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 60 years, Joyce Mitchell, his three children, Emma Lee Mitchell Melton(Mark), J.W. Mitchell(Charlene) and Sherry Tingler (Wayne); his five granddaughters, Lindsey and Allison Tingler, Emma, Paige, and Charlotte Mitchell; in addition, his nephews, Johnny and Jerry Mitchell, Jay Johnson, and Skeebo Johnson who was often called in time of need. He was a devoted and loving husband and father. He left a legacy of service and commitment to his Church and community that he dearly loved. He was a lifetime member and actively involved in Taylorsville Baptist Church where he became a Deacon in his early 20’s and served as a Trustee. He was a member of the Doswell Ruritan Club for 55 years and a charter member of the Doswell Fire Company. He loved the game of baseball and softball and coached for 20 plus years. He was his childrens’ and granddaughters’ biggest fan. Memorial services were held at Taylorsville Baptist Church, Doswell, Sunday, April 14. Interment private. Earline (Jackie) Wallace, 73 of Montpelier, went to be with the Lord; Friday, April 19, 2013. She was preceded in death by her father, Earl S. Vass, Sr., her mother, Sadie West Richardson, and her stepfather, Clopton Abner Richardson. She is survived by her husband James Wallace, Sr. of Montpelier, her son, James Wallace, Jr. (Linda S.) of Mineral, Va. and daughter, Penny J. Wallace of Bumpass. Va. Jackie was a member of Hopeful Baptist Church, where the family received friends Monday, April 22, 2013. Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 23, 2013 in Hopeful Baptist Church, Montpelier, VA 23192 with burial to follow in the church cemetery.
