Obituaries, Week of May 9, 2013: Courtney, Curtis, Gammon, Leatherman, Nichols and Potter
Nancy Susan Courtney, of Montpelier, went to be with the Lord April 24, 2013. Susan was the daughter of the late Jack and Sue Shutter of Richmond. She is survived by her husband of 39 years, Walter James “Jim” Courtney; her sister, Carol Wignall; nephew Josh and his son, Caleb. Susan graduated Thomas Jefferson High School of Richmond, in 1972; helped with the Henrico Humane Society during its start-up time; worked 12 years at the Hallmark store in the Dumbarton Square shopping center; and more recently, worked at the Montpelier branch of Pamunkey Regional Library. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
William H. “Buck” Curtis, of Mechanicsville, passed away Monday, April 29, 2013. He is survived by his wife, Jenifer M. Curtis; son, Joe Curtis; two daughters, Crystal and Fay Curtis; brother, Ronnie Curtis (Betty); and stepdaughter, Ashley Sharrow (Evan). Graveside services were held Saturday, May 4, at 9 a.m. at Signal Hill Memorial Park.
Eldridge L. Gammon, 79, of Ashland, passed away Monday, April 29, 2013. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Julia Gammon; two sons, Jay Gammon (Laura) and Tommy Gammon (Tanya); two grandsons, Drew and Tyler Gammon; two sisters, Maxine McAnally and Audrey Loving; and a brother, Buck Gammon. Eldridge was a member of Ashland Church of God. He served his Country in the U.S. Army. He was a loving husband, father, brother and grandfather. William Jacob Leatherman, III, 68, of Richmond, passed away Monday, April 29, 2013 from a stroke. Bill served seven and a half years in the U.S. Navy and 17 years in the Air National Guard as a Staff Sergeant, where he was a radio repairman and did installations in the jets. He received three college degrees, he was supervisor of the libraries in Prince George, Claremont and Surrey, and taught schools in Hopewell for four years. He is survived by his wife, Geraldine Page Leatherman; his mother, Mary Leatherman; sister, Suzy Leatherman; and brother, Marlin Leatherman. The family received friends Thursday, May 2, 2013 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, where services were held Friday, May 3. Interment Washington Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Diabetes Association. Bill said goodbye to his friends and buddies in the Navy and the Air National Guard as he took his final trip on the ship to be with his Lord.
Gladys Mae Borkey Nichols, 71, of Ashland, the widow of Paul B. Nichols, passed away May 6, 2013. She is survived by her daughter, Wanda Lee Nichols; her siblings, Arlette Southworth, Barbara Jones, David O. Borkey, Linda Durrett, Kenny Borkey (Elaine), Peggy Borkey, Dennis Borkey (Lexie), and Sandra Hendrick (Ben); and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Nichols was a member of Zion Christian Church where she served as a Trustee and Elder. She was also a past president of the Disciple Woman’s Group. The family received friends Wednesday, May 8 at the Nelsen Funeral Home, Reid Chapel, Ashland, where funeral services were held Thursday, May 9, 2013.Interment will be in Signal Hill Memorial Park. Mary Ellen Shearin Hanes Potter, born Feb. 9, 1913 in Colusa County, Calif., stepped into eternity April 27, 2013. She is the widow of Edward Jackson “Jack” Potter, and is survived by her children, Ellen Jolene Robinson, Leon Hanes Davis (Donna), and Janice Campbell (Donald) and a host of grands and greats. Memorial services were held Sunday, at West End Community Center. She was beloved, and will be greatly missed.
