Obituaries, Week of July 18, 2013: Burton, Coker, Harris, Hill, Larkin, Miller and Rollason

Edward Redman Burton, Sr., 83, of Mechanicsville, died July 11, 2013. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Wilma L. Burton; son, Edward R. Burton, Jr.; and sister, Shirley B. Williamson. Surviving are his wife, June Parrish Adams Burton; sons, William P. Burton (Gloria), Robert W. Burton (Joyce), both of Mechanicsville and Dr. Jeffery A. Adams (Robin) of Cornelius, N.C.; daughter, Judi A. Tilley of Bumpass; daughter-in-law, Louise Burton of Waterview; grandchildren, Patrick Burton, Amanda Pullman, Rachel Wommack, Richard Burton, Justin Burton, Kathy Willis, Becky Lowe, Billy Burton, Jeremy Tilley, Christina, Rachel, Alex, Jacob and William Adams; nine great-grandchildren; and a special niece, Beth Williamson. Mr. Burton was an active member of First Baptist Church, Richmond and the Acts S.S. Class. Mr. Burton retired with 31 years of service as a Richmond City Police Department Administrative Assistant to Colonel Frank S. Duling. As a member of the Intelligence Division, he worked with the FBI, CIA and Secret Service on undercover assignments. He received many awards during his years of service. He was an active participant and held many leadership positions in all branches of Masonry to include: Grand High Priest, State of Virginia (Royal Arch), 33 Degree and KCCH (Scottish Rite), KYCH (Commandery), Past Patron Areme # 17 O. E. S. and Worshipful Master and 53 year member of Henrico Union # 130 (Blue Lodge). The family received friends Sunday, July 14. An Eastern Star Memorial Service and a Masonic Memorial Service was held. Funeral services were held Monday, July 15, at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home. Interment will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 2709 Monument Avenue, Richmond, VA 23220, with memo line “Wells for Eli.” Funds donated for his favorite charity will be used to dig a well for the Emmaus Church and preschool in South Africa.

Rozelle O. Coker, 82, of Mechanicsville, went to be with the Lord July 1, 2013. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Sallie Owen; and 12 siblings. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Robert “Bob” Coker; three sons, Terry (Jocelyn), David and Charlie (Donna) Coker; four grandchildren, and four siblings, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. The family received friends Saturday, July 6, and Sunday, July 7, at the Mechanicsville Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, where services were held Monday, July 8, 2013. Interment Signal Hill Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Grandchildren’s Education Fund, payable to Robert Coker, 8266 Franklin Lane, Mechanicsville, VA 23111.

Calvin Floyd Harris, Sr., 87, of Mechanicsville, passed away July 2, 2013. He was preceded in death by his two children, Calvin F. Harris Jr. and Susan Harris Bingman; sister, Mildred Saunders; and brother, Aubrey Harris. He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Mary Nunley Harris; daughter, Jennifer Lynn Harris; grandson, Curtis Joe Bingman; brother, Franklin Harris; sister, Margaret Eckrote; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was half-owner of Daniel’s Wayside Furniture on Mechanicsville Turnpike, as well as founder and owner of Mighty Auto Parts of Virginia, Inc. He was an elder in the Three Rivers Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. The family received friends Friday, July 12, at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, where services were held Saturday, July 13. Interment Hanover Memorial Park.

Betty Ann Hill, 78, of Mechanicsville, passed away Wednesday, July 10, 2013. She is survived by her husband of 31 years, DeWitt Hill Jr.; son, Richard “Rick” Carlton (Retzi); daughter, E. Ann Lumpkin; son, Timothy Hill; grandchildren, Don (Amanda), Brandon (Laura), Michael (Gina), Michelle (Paul), Timothy H. Jr.; great-granchildren, Steve, Ashley, Paula, Bryce and Bryant; brother-in-law, Sonny (Connie); sisters-in-law, Dorothy Markow, Alice (Billy), Jan Marie (Roscoe); and several nieces and nephews. The family received friends Thursday, July 11, at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home. Funeral services were held Friday, July 12, 2013 at Sharon Baptist Church, King William, Va. Interment church cemetery.

Dale R. Larkin, 59 of Mechanicsville, went to be with his Lord July 11, 2013. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Susan J. Lakin; his children, Holly Richardson, Jeremy Lakin and Amy Garcia; siblings, Paul Lakin, Allan Lakin, Margaret Crenshaw and David Lakin; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The family received friends Monday, July 15 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home. Services were held Tuesday, July 16 at Cool Spring Baptist Church, Mechanicsville, VA 23116.

Henry James Miller, Jr., born Feb. 24, 1930, went to be with the Lord July 7, 2013. He was preceded in death by Harriet S. Miller, his devoted wife of 57 years. He is survived by his three children, Cynthia Miller Cummings (Robert Cummings), Henry James Miller III and Amy Miller Bordi (Mark Bordi). He was the proud grandfather to seven, Joseph Wade, Matthew Wade, Adam Miller, Logan Miller, Marissa Bondi, Jackson Bondi and Trevor Bondi; and two great-grandchildren, Christopher Wade and Trenton Wade. He was a veteran of the Korean War, having served his country in the U.S. Navy in both the Atlantic and Pacific Fleets. Henry was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9808 and the Richmond Council of the Navy League, serving as the president for two years. He retired from the Continental Insurance Companies as a commercial manager. His faithful devotion to his family and his church were hallmarks of his life. He was a member of Broadus Memorial Baptist Church for over 50 years. The family received friends Friday, July 12, at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home. Funeral services were held Saturday, July 13, at Broadus Memorial Baptist Church, 5351 Pole Green Road, Mechanicsville, VA 23111. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Caitlin A. Rollason, 19, of Mechanicsville, left this life to be with our Father, July 12, 2013. She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Shirley Brown “Gran.” She is survived by her brother, Wesley; her parents, Gwen and Dale; dear friend and aunt, Cheryl Draper (Dwayn); uncles, Will Brown “Uncle Buck” (Angie), Ronnie Easton; very special grandfather, William H. Brown “Pa;” grandparents, Vanessa and Ronnie Easton; cousins, Danielle Brown, Griffin and Logan Draper, Zachary and Abigail Easton; a host of best friends, Stephen Henley, Stephan Martin, Taylor Williams, Conner Worthington, Bryan Heinitz, Eric Grubbs; and her precious Ms. Kitty. Caitlin’s contagious laugh and smile that would light up a room will be greatly missed. “We will see you again C8EMAY.” The family received friends Monday, July 15, at the Mechanicsville Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, where funeral services were held Tuesday, July 16.
