The Atlee Little League 9/10 year-old squad captured the State Little League Softball championship this past week. After defeating Mechanicsville earlier this month for the District 5 title, Atlee advanced to state play, going 6-0 in the tournament, culminating with an 11-2 win in the championship game over Gate City.
The Hanover Hornets 14U softball team won their pool and placed fifth in the NSA East A World Series held this past weekend in Chattanooga, Tenn. The Hornets defeated the Indy Crush in the quarterfinals before being eliminated in semifinal action. Simultaneously, the Dixie Chicks 14U team participated in the 16U NSA East B World Series in Williamsburg, finishing in fourth place.
The Redskins aren’t the only team to practice in Central Virginia. Patrick Henry will be the first of the county’s four schools to begin preparations for the 2013 season when they take the practice field in Ashland Monday morning. The Patriots, led by new head coach Jonathan Clark, are looking for their first winning season since 2008, and open at home Sept. 6 against county rival Hanover.
The Atlee Raiders will begin their training camp Monday afternoon, looking to improve on a 5-5 season in 2012 and looking for replacements to now-departed quarterback Kenner Berry (Bridgewater) and running back Morris Jackson (Virginia Union).
The Greater Richmond Aquatic League (GRAL) holds its Champs postseason swim meet Friday through Sunday at the new Collegiate School Aquatic Center. Individual swimmers qualified for the competition during the recently-completed regular season. County swim clubs to be represented, with number of swimmers qualified in parenthesis, are Ashcreek (69), Ashland (75), Atlee (35), Battlefield Green (19), Bell Creek (13), Hanover Country Club (32), Kings Charter (69), Mechanicsville (50), Milestone (48), Pebble Creek (53), and Rockville (41).
