Hanover High School standout will start for Virginia Tech
To those who know Sam Rogers, it was no surprise when Virginia Tech assistant coach Shane Beamer announced late Tuesday that the Hanover grad, a walk-on freshman, had won the starting fullback job and will line up next Saturday, Aug. 31, in their season opener against two-time defending National Champion Alabama.
Rogers, a four-year starter for Hanover High School who led the Hawks to three Central Region titles in four years, was very gracious when reacting to the news.
“The biggest thing for me is trusting in what I can do and being coachable,” Rogers told the Herald-Progress via Twitter Tuesday night. “I would love to say I do it all on my own, but without support from friends, family and without a relationship with God, none of this is possible. I’m truly blessed and I can’t wait to play for such a great fan base.”
Rogers will wear the #45 jersey for the Hokies. Their season opener will be aired on ESPN.
