Marvin M. “Bunny” Alvis, 86, of Richmond, went to be with the Lord Aug. 29, 2013. He is survived by his loving wife, Martha Lowry Alvis; son, Robert Wayne Alvis; and daughter, Brenda Kay Alvis. He was a long-time member of Northside Baptist Church. He retired from RF&P Railroad after 45 years of service. The family received friends Friday at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home. Graveside services were held Saturday, Aug. 31 at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Benjamin C. Atkins, 84, of Henrico, went peacefully to be with the Lord Monday, Aug. 26, 2013. He was preceded in death by his parents, Luther and Lou; a son, David B. Atkins; three brothers and one sister. Ben is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 65 years, Virginia Ellen Atkins; daughter, Brenda Madani; three granddaughters, Jaime, Jill and Michelle “Puddin;” sister, Genevieve Glazebrook. Retiring after 40 years of service with Gold Metal Incorporated, he enjoyed fishing, traveling, spending time with his family, as well as his active service to the Lord at Mechanicsville Baptist Church. The family received friends Thursday at the Mechanicsville Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home. Funeral services were held Friday, Aug. 30, 2013 at Mechanicsville Baptist Church. Ronald W. Brown, Sr., In loving memory of Ronald W. Brown Sr., 81, of Mechanicsville, who passed away Aug. 31, 2013. He served honorably in the U.S. Army and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. He is survived by Cornelia Baugh (Danny), Karl Brown (Susan), Ronald W. Brown Jr. (Shelly), Janice Vincill (Kurt), Stacey Smith (Don), Lana Cathell; and 14 grandchildren. Graveside services were held Monday, Sept. 2, 2013, in Oakwood Cemetery.
Marjorie Ann Hall Cosby, born Oct. 27, 1922 in West Virginia, passed away Aug. 7, 2013. She lived in Lebanon, Pa. and was previously a resident of Mechanicsville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert S. Cosby Jr. She is survived by her children, Ann Hargrove and husband, David, of Lebanon, Pa., Robert S. Cosby III and wife, Tricia, of Richmond, and Helen Dickens and husband, Robert, of Mount Airy, Md.; grandchildren, Eric, Jude, Andy, Kristen, Rob, Beau and Jonathan; and a great-granddaughter, Abrianna. She was loved and will be missed by all. The family received friends Wednesday, Aug. 28, at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, Mechanicsville. Graveside services were held Thursday, Aug. 29, at Signal Hill Memorial Park, 12360 Hanover Courthouse Road, Hanover. Evelyn Williams “Polly” Edwards, 94, of Mechanicsville, passed away Aug. 30, 2013. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry L. Edwards; and daughter, Willie E. Shropshire. She is survived by a son, Ronald L. Edwards (Margaret); three grandchildren, Lisa Price (Travis) of Bland, Va., Ronald L. Edwards Jr. (Rebecca) of Mechanicsville and Stephanie E. Askew (Scott) of Belhaven, N.C.; four great-granddaughters, and one great-grandson. Mrs. Edwards was a member of Providence United Methodist Church. Visitation was held Monday, Sept. 2 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett’s Funeral Home, Mechanicsville, and where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013. Jack D. Glascock, Sr., 78, of Aylett, passed away Aug. 31, 2013. He is survived by his long-time companion, Linda M. Kiracofe; sons, Jack D. Glascock Jr. and his wife, Wanell Phillips and Michael W. Glascock and his wife, Susie; grandchildren, Whitney M. Glascock, Dylan M. Glascock and Emma G. Glascock; great-grandchild, Hayden Todd Jessie; stepgrandchildren, Colby Sipe, Jessica Bradley, Ariel Abbott, Ashleigh Owen, and Amanda Babb; brothers, Marshall W. Glascock and his wife, Louise and Garland L. Glascock; sisters, Lucille Harris and Marion Knowles; and his faithful dog, Kody. Mr. Glascock was a U.S. Marine veteran and was retired from the DMV, where he worked as an electrician for many years. He was a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church. Boyd D. Ivester, died Friday, Aug. 30, 2013. He was 91 years old. He was born in Lawndale, N.C., the son of Velus Ivester and Rebecca Willis Ivester. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Shelley. He is survived by his son and wife, Jerry and Sonya Ivester; two granddaughters, Theresa McSwain and Kimberly Blanton; four great-grandchildren, Lauren Smart, Thomas McSwain, Megan Hoyle and Hayley Hoyle; and one great-great-granddaughter, Addison Smart. He is also survived by his devoted nephew and wife, Danny and Suzette Mauney; and great-nieces, Ivy Mauney, Austen Mauney and Lydia Mauney. Mr. Ivester leaves behind beloved nieces and nephews as well as many dedicated and loved friends. Boyd was thankful for his special relationship with his goddaughter and caregiver, Karen Catlett. Mr. Ivester had been a resident of the Masonic Home of Virginia since 2008. He was very appreciative of the kindness and care extended to him by staff and fellow residents. Mr. Ivester served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII. He was employed in commercial construction all of his working years, being affiliated with Taylor & Parrish and Ethyl Corp. He was responsible for many projects, the largest being Fashion Square in Charlottesville. He was a 32nd degree Mason, a member of Masonic Lodge #344, Scottish Rite and ACCA Shrine Mini Patrol. He was an active member of Mechanicsville United Methodist Church for over 50 years, where he served faithfully in every area to which he was called. His construction expertise let him guide the three construction projects that enlarged the small church over the past years. He loved God and he loved his church. The family received friends at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, Sunday, Sept. 1, with a Masonic Memorial Service. Barbara Baldwin Martin, 79, of Mechanicsville, died Aug. 29, 2013. She was born Jan. 30, 1934 in Arvonia, Va., daughter of the late William R., Sr., and Margaret R. Baldwin. Mrs. Martin was a member of Enon United Methodist Church and retired from Life Insurance Company of Virginia with 31 years of service. Surviving are her husband of 52 years, Osborne P. “O.P.” Martin Sr.; a son, William O. “Billy” Martin; a stepson, Osborne P. “Skipper” Martin Jr. and wife, Eileen; grandchildren, Jared, Joey, Lindsey and Ashley Martin, all of Mechanicsville; and a caring sister-in-law, Doris A. Martin. She was preceded in death by a brother, William R. Baldwin Jr. Funeral services were Saturday, Aug. 31, at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home. Nora Waller Stowe, 95, of Mechanicsville, passed away peacefully Monday, Aug. 26, 2013. She was preceded in death by her husband, C. Raymond Stowe; and is survived by her daughter, Shirley Cahoon and husband, Ken; three grandchildren, Darrell Cahoon, Jennifer Berkle and husband, Joe, and Michael Cahoon and wife, Laurie; two great-grandchildren, Matthew and Jadyn; and her niece, Jeannette Lewis. The family received friends Wednesday at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home. Graveside services were held Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013 at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Ruby June Trainham, 86, of Varina, passed away Monday, Aug. 26, 2013, with her loved ones by her side. She was recently preceded in death by her granddaughter, Concetta Evans; and leaves to cherish her memory a daughter, Beverly J. Loser (Wilfred); two sons, George “Rootie” Willis (Susan) and Philip Willis (Cindy); nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.
