The Ashland Beekeepers Association offers a Beekeeping for Beginners class Saturday, Nov. 23, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., at the Ashland Public Library (201 S. Railroad Avenue); registration begins at 8:45 a.m. Saturday morning. The cost is $20 per person, and includes a copy of the book Beekeeping Basics. There will be an hour-long brown bag lunch break (lunch not provided). Registration is limited. To enroll, contact the Association: (preferred) or call (804) 752-1862.

Beekeeping for Beginners is designed for anyone interested in bees and bee culture. The class will give a brief overview of the life cycle of bees. It addresses the role of bees and beekeeping in a healthy ecosystem. It summarizes equipment needs for beekeepers; how to purchase bees; and where to locate bee hives. Time and tasks for hive management will also be considered. The class will conclude with a honey tasting and a review of bee-keeping’s more tangible benefits, from honey and wax to propolis and pollen. If weather permits, class participants will be invited to an optional hive tour later in November.

“The active beekeeping season is usually over by November,” said Paul Hodge, President of the Ashland Beekeepers Association. “We’ve scheduled the Beekeeping for Beginners class for late fall because orders are typically placed in December for package bees or nucs (starter hives) delivered the following spring. 2013 class participants who decide to begin keeping bees will have time to secure their bees and supplies for the March, 2014 start of the next beekeeping season.”

The Ashland Beekeepers Association (formerly Central Virginia Beekeepers Association-East) was founded in 1981 to promote bees and the art of beekeeping through education, advocacy, and communication. Individual membership is $10 (families $15) per year. Most members live in Hanover and surrounding counties. Association members range in age from high school students to retirees. The club meets at 7 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month in the Council Chambers of the Ashland Municipal Building, 101 Thompson Street. Visitors are always welcome.
