Emergency responders were called Thursday to the scene of a house fire on N. Washington Highway near its intersection with Archie Canon Drive in Ashland.

According to Lt. James Shelhorse, of the Ashland Police Department, an on-duty Ashland Police Officer noticed smoke emanating from the single family home and notified dispatch.

One individual was in the home at the time of the incident. According to Shelhorse, he was experiencing trouble breathing due to smoke exposure and also sustained some cuts after exiting the home through a window.

The individual was treated onsite.

As of approximately 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Hanover Fire-EMS was still onsite working to control the fire. Traffic on N. Washington Highway was forced to detour around the scene.
