It’s the little things that make the magic — the happiness in a child’s face, a chill in the air, the promise of the first snow and the glitter and glamour of the dancing lights. Combine them and the magic of the holiday season comes alive. Field Day of the Past will once again light the spark of life into the holiday spirit when volunteers flip the switch to turn on the lights which sparkle throughout the show grounds and will kick off the holiday season, signaling the coming of the associations’ annual “A Celebration of the Season.” This event is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 7 from 4 to 8 p.m.

“A Celebration of the Season” is a community wide, old fashioned seasonal event designed to bring people from neighboring communities together in an evening of holiday related activities. The event also serves as Field Day of the Past’s way of thanking the community for its support throughout the year.

During the event, the Short Pump Grocery will be open as will the Short Pump Garage, where the 2013 Goochland Christmas Parents Marc and Elizabeth Jones will be on hand to collect donations for this year’s Christmas Mother Program A grand Christmas tree will be erected in the Educational Building and kids of all ages are invited to make decorations and hang them from the tree. In the Field Day of the Past Post Office, volunteers will be on hand to help everyone write a letter to Santa.

“How the Grinch Stole Christmas” will be playing on the screen in the Educational Building, now a Field Day tradition, and tables and chairs will be set up for guests to enjoy some of the goodies on sale. In the Educational Building, Girl Scouts will be selling hot dogs, chips and drinks and Wilma Carwile will offer her delicious soups, ham biscuits and to-die-for candies for sale.

Outside, a bonfire will warm the night, so bring marshmallows to toast over the fire.

Walk the grounds and enjoy the lights or take a wagon ride through the field. Rumor has it that Santa will be stopping by to enjoy some goodies and visit with the children.

Admission to “A Celebration of the Season” is a donation to the Christmas Mother.

“A Celebration of the Season” is located on the Field Day of the Past show grounds, 14 miles west of Richmond, off I-64, Exit #173 (Rockville-Manakin), then south 1/8 of a mile. Parking is free. For more info, call (804) 741-8468.
