Teenage driver charged in pedestrian fatality

A 65-year-old man struck by a vehicle in a Mechanicsville neighborhood has died from his injuries.

According to a statement released by the Hanover Sheriff’s Office, Dennis Tobin, 65, of the 6000 block of Northfall Creek Parkway in Mechanicsville, died Dec. 4 as a result of injuries incurred earlier in the week.

Monday, Dec. 2, at approximately 8 a.m., the Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of Old Cavalry Drive and Gettysburg Lane in the Battlefield Green subdivision for a report of a crash involving a pedestrian.

Preliminary investigation indicates that a 2001 Jeep Cherokee was traveling east on Old Cavalry Drive when it struck Tobin and his 2003 Buick Regal. At the time of the crash, Tobin was standing outside of his vehicle inspecting a flat tire. The Buick was parked along the curb on the right side of the roadway.

Tobin was transported to VCU Medical Center with life-threatening injuries by Hanover Fire-EMS where he died from his injuries Wednesday.

The driver who struck Tobin, a 17-year-old male of Mechanicsville, has been charged with reckless driving.

While the cause of the crash remains under investigation, neither speed nor alcohol appears to have been a factor.
