Hanover’s Board of Supervisors began the new year by electing new leadership.

Henry District Supervisor Sean Davis was unanimously named chairman and will reside over the board in 2014. Aubrey “Bucky” Stanley, Beaverdam District supervisor, nominated Davis, who replaces former chairman W. Canova Peterson IV, Mechanicsville District representative.

Davis thanked his fellow supervisors and reflected on Peterson’s term as chairman.

“You focused on the things that mattered to Hanover,” Davis said.

Peterson said serving on the board “has been and is the greatest of honors.”

Davis, who was the vice chair in 2013, joked about what he tells individuals who ask him what the position entails.

“You do whatever the chairman doesn’t want to do,” he said.

Davis said he could only remember one time when Peterson couldn’t attend an event or meeting.

The first move Davis made as the new chairman was freezing pay increase for supervisors. The board put a 2 percent increase in place Jan. 1, 2012.

“I will move to freeze the pay for the board of supervisors for this year,” Davis said.

After being elected, Davis spoke about what the future will hold and that Hanover will be in the right direction.

“I believe our brightest days are ahead,” Davis said.

The second part of reorganization was electing the new vice chairman. Ed Via III, Ashland District supervisor, nominated South Anna’s supervisor Wayne T. Hazzard for the position, who became vice chair with a 5-1 vote. Hazzard abstained from voting and Chickahominy District Supervisor Angela Kelly-Wiecek was the only “nay” that evening. When asked about her decision, Kelly-Wiecek said she would not be making a  “public comment.”

“I look forward to working with him,” she added.
