The 2014 Ashland Chalk Walk will take place Saturday, May 3 in the Plaza in front of the Ashland Library. The event is the fifth annual Sidewalk “Chalk Art” event hosted by the Ashland Main Street Association with many Ashland businesses and individuals assisting through their generous sponsorships. The event takes place between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. All participants must pre-register for the event and may secure registration information, guidelines and tips, and review photos from last year’s event by visiting the Ashland Main Street Association website at  Pre-registration began March 31.

The “chalk event” grew out of the desire to raise awareness of the arts in Ashland through the production and display of art for all ages. The concrete canvas in The Plaza provides a space within the Ashland Cultural Arts District to bring a community of artists and families together for an enjoyable day of creativity.  Professional, amateur, and aspiring artists of all ages are invited to participate and demonstrate their skills to an appreciative public. There is plenty of time to prepare a sketch to work from before the pre-registration deadline of April 30. An adult must accompany participants, 14 and younger, for the duration of the event.   All chalks are provided and the images should be family friendly.  Spaces are limited to 40 3-foot blocks and 20 6-foot blocks. The reservation fee for one 3-foot block is $5 and one 6-foot block is $10. Registration may be completed through PayPal on the Ashland Main Street Association website. The registration form can also be downloaded, filled out and mailed to the designated Ashland Main Street Association address.

Last year students from Patrick Henry and Hanover high schools were sponsored as designated artists and demonstrated their amazing talent at the Chalk Walk and received money for their efforts. This exciting sponsorship opportunity will be continued and organizers hope to have students from many area schools represented at the fifth annual Chalk Walk.
