Traffic on Interstate 295 northbound was snarled Friday morning when a tractor-trailer carrying oranges overturned near the Pole Green Road interchange.
According to Sgt. Thomas Molnar, at approximately 3:30 a.m. Friday morning, state police responded to the scene after the driver of a 2006 Peterbuilt tractor-trailer ran off the right side of the roadway. The driver, Jose Cruz, 36, of Orlando, Fl., overcorrected causing the tractor-trailer to overturn onto the tractor-trailer’s passenger side, Molnar said.
Cruz was wearing his safety belt but suffered minor injuries in the crash and was transported by ambulance to VCU Medical Center. He was later charged with reckless driving.
The trailer was loaded with approximately 76,000 pounds of oranges, which spilled out of the trailer and onto the roadway forcing the closure of all four lanes initially. The three left lanes of I-295 were re-opened at approximately 7:15 a.m. as crews remained on site cleaning up the oranges as well as diesel fuel that leaked out of the overturned vehicle.
All lanes had opened by approximately 11:30 a.m. Friday
Molnar said the crash remains under investigation.
