Mineral man dies in dump truck crash
A Mineral man died Monday when the dump truck he was driving overturned on West Patrick Henry Road near its intersection with Scotchtown Road.
Lt. Chris Whitley, of the Hanover Sheriff’s Office, identified the deceased Tuesday morning as William F. Powell, 70, of the 10500 block of Jefferson Highway in Mineral.
“We extend our sincerest condolences to the Powell family as they attempt to deal with this tragic loss,” Whitley said.
The Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene of the crash Monday around noon. Preliminary investigation indicated that Powell was driving west on West Patrick Henry Road in a 1987 GMC dump truck, when it ran off the right side of the roadway near Scotchtown Road. This caused the vehicle to overturn on its right side and slide across the eastbound lane before coming to rest on the left shoulder.
Powell was the sole occupant and died at the scene.
The truck was hauling a full load of dirt and it took crews the majority of Monday afternoon to investigate the scene of the crash and remove the vehicle and debris from the roadway.
Route 54 did not reopen until approximately 6 p.m.
