Burkwood, Atlee coach gets glimpse of swim team future

After years of competing in the James River Aquatic Club (JRAC), Burkwood Swim and Racquet Club made the move for the 2014 season to the Greater Richmond

The culmination of that first season comes this weekend as they join Ashland, Hanover Country Club, Milestone, Ashcreek and other county teams for the GRAL Champs Meet at the Collegiate School Aquatic Center (CSAC) in Chesterfield.

Karen Seeber, head coach of Burkwood, says there have been positives and negatives to their inaugural campaign in the new league.

“We wanted to compete with more teams closer to us,” Seeber said, noting the differences between qualifying standards of the two associations.

“In GRAL, once you break a certain time, you’re in Champs, where in JRAC the top two performers are in a timed category. I could make it one week, and someone could come in afterwards, swim a faster time, bumping me out of my spot. Overall, we’ve had a lot of people help us in this transition, and we’ve enjoyed it.”
