Local high schoolers spend week on the James
Two Hanover High School students are ditching the notebooks and classrooms and hopping in canoes and kayaks this summer.

This week, those students will be adventuring down the lower part of the James River traveling 340 miles as part of the James River Association’s fourth “floating classroom” expedition. The trip is sponsored completely by Dominion Power.
“We want them to take away a love for the James,” said Jessica Templeton, education and ecology school manager with JRA and expedition organizer.
Templeton said students will learn all about the river and what it means to them in addition to how they can be a steward of the resources, which is the organization’s biggest goals and one that’s usually met.
“It’s one of those programs where we can’t help but leave with a gleam in our eye,” Templeton said.
Coleman Tribble is one of 30 students going on one of the river expeditions this year, which began Saturday and goes until Aug. 2.
Before the trip, Tribble said he was excited to paddle and be on the river for eight days.
“It’ll make for a great story,” he said.
