Redskins, Patriots face off at training camp

As dawn arrived in Richmond Monday morning, the usual sea of burgundy and gold at the Bon Secours Washington Redskins Training Center became mixed with nautical blue and new century silver.

In another first, two NFL teams took the field in RVA in front of throngs of fans as the New England Patriots joined Washington on the two football fields for the first of three days of joint practices leading up to their preseason opener tonight two hours north at FedEx Field.

For both teams, it’s a chance to change up the usual tone and drumbeat of practice, getting to see different faces line up opposite you for drills, to put in some hits, albeit controlled, on someone other than your teammates.

After Tuesday afternoon’s practice, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady saw the positives of the trip south.

“We got a lot of reps, probably 80-90 Monday and similar to that today,” Brady said. “Normally you don’t get that much in a given week. We got a lot of work against a good defense. They have very good corners and safeties, so we’re going to have to tighten things up before Thursday night.”
