Weight restriction lifted on Cold Harbor Road bridge
The Virginia Department of Transportation has lifted a weight restriction on the Cold Harbor Road bridge spanning I-295 after crews discovered that cracks uncovered during an inspection were not structural.
“The bridge posting was a precautionary measure following a visual inspection. We take the appearance of cracks very seriously and wanted to investigate further rather than risk the safety of drivers,” said Gary Martin, district bridge engineer. “We were able to quickly polish and test the areas appearing to be cracked and found that no structural cracks exist.”
The signage indicating the weight limit restrictions have been removed and normal travel has resumed.
Wednesday and into Thursday, state officials weren’t allowing large vehicles to cross the bridge after discovering what they thought at the time were structural problems.
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) had posted the Cold Harbor Road (Route 156) bridge in Henrico County to five tons as the result of findings and put into place detours around the bridge for large vehicles.
