The Concert Ballet of Virginia will present two performances of its 37th annual Winter Repertory Gala Friday, Feb. 22, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 24, at 2:30 p.m. at The Woman’s Club Auditorium, 211 East Franklin Street.
The full-length repertory performances will be accompanied by The Concert Ballet Orchestra, under the direction of Iris Schwartz. It also includes the return of two veteran Concert Ballet dancers: Laura Goss Christian and Jeannine Halphen.
This popular collaboration features light-hearted dance pieces from the late 19th to early 20th centuries along with musical interludes performed by The Concert Ballet Orchestra. Similar to the iconic presentations of The Boston Pops Orchestra with Arthur Fiedler, The Concert Ballet’s Winter Gala offers cabaret seating along with desserts and refreshments available for purchase at the performances.
The returning dancers reflect The Concert Ballet’s core belief: “You never have to stop dancing.” Laura Goss Christian danced with The Concert Ballet 2003-06, experiencing such great classical ballets as “The Nutcracker,” “Swan Lake,” and “Sleeping Beauty.” Jeannine Halphen danced with the Company in a variety of productions from 1992 through 1998. The Concert Ballet welcomes these “new” dancers in their encore dancing careers.
The Winter Gala dance program includes “Die Fledermaus,” choreographed by Scott Boyer to music from the celebrated operetta of the same name by Johann Strauss II; “Babes in Toyland” features music by Victor Herbert; “Skaters Waltz,” choreographed by Kristie Mesco to music by Emile Walteufel; and “America Dances,” also choreographed by Scott Boyer to the music “Suite of Old American Dances” by composer-arranger Robert Russell Bennett.
Tickets for the Winter Gala Repertory performances are $15 for adults in advance, $18 at the door; and $12 for seniors, students, and children in advance, $15 at the door.
