Hanover School Board adopts $188.7M budget, cuts 16 teacher positions
The Hanover County School Board approved a balanced budget Thursday night with a 7-0 vote.
The adopted $188.7 million budget follows the recommendations presented by Dr. Jamelle Wilson, superintendent, at Tuesday’s work session.
The amended proposal transferred $480,000 from the capital improvements plan to the general fund to spare eight of the 24 teacher positions originally slated for elimination.
Within the CIP, $1 million designated for school bus replacements was shifted to technology needs.
The board had held a series of meetings to deliberate on the budget. Members discussed several other alternative options for balancing the budget, such as charging fees for participation in extracurricular activities, but those concepts are not currently under consideration for the 2013-14 budget.
At this coming Wednesday’s Board of Supervisors meeting, County Administrator Rhu Harris will introduce a Fiscal Year 2014 budget for Hanover County. The meeting beings at 6 p.m. in the County Administration building.
