Investigators from the Sheriff’s Office and Hanover Fire Marshal’s Office have determined that on the morning of the fire, Shepperson initially assaulted her 11-year-old son with an axe, which incapacitated him.  She then set two fires inside of the residence with the intention of killing her 11-year-old, and her two remaining children, ages 10 months and 7, as well as herself.

The 11-year-old boy remains at VCU Medical Center, but is expected to make a full recovery. The two remaining children have been released from VCU Medical Center and are being cared for by relatives.

Shepperson was arraigned in Hanover County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court on Feb. 25.
