The Randolph-Macon Men’s Basketball team took advantage of 59.2-percent shooting from the field, going 29-49 from the floor, to down Worcester Polytechnic Institute 79-68 in the NCAA Tournament Second Round at Assumption College Saturday.
The Yellow Jackets advance to the “Sweet 16″ and improve to 21-9 on the season. WPI ended its season 26-3.
R-MC was led by 18 points and six rebounds from sophomore big-man, Joe Hassell. Connor Sullivan and Lamar Giggetts joined Hassell in double-figures with 14 and 13 points, respectively. Marcus Badger put together a solid game of 11 points, seven boards and a game-high seven assists.
The Engineers were led by 25 points from Ryan Kolb, while Marco Coppola added in 17 markers. Zach Karalis chipped in with 13 points off the bench for WPI.
R-MC jumped out to an early 11-8 lead at the 15:16 mark following a dunk by Andre Simon, assisted by Badger.
Kolb would bring the Engineers within two after tipping in his own missed layup with 11:57 left to play.
The Yellow Jackets would respond, going on a 23-16 run over the next 11 minutes of play to take a 39-30 into the intermission.
Randolph-Macon started the second half strong, scoring the first five points to increase its lead to 44-30 with 17:50 left to play.
WPI began to chip away at the Yellow Jacket lead and pulled within five points after a Coppola trifecta with 9:21 on the clock, but that is as close as the Engineers would get as the Yellow Jackets sunk eight free-throws in the final two minutes to secure the victory.
The Yellow Jackets held WPI to a 39.4 shooting percentage from the field and had a staggering 42-23 rebounding advantage, including a 35-15 edge on the defensive glass.
Randolph-Macon advances to the “Sweet 16″ and will play at Amherst College (26-2) on Saturday, March 16.
