      Fifth ANNUAL ABUNDANCE SWAP

      Sunday, Jan. 29, 2012 (2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.)

at the historic Hanover Arts & Activities Center

      Abundance Abounds

Here is definitely something different to do on a chilly Sunday afternoon in January…..

As we set about addressing our resolutions at the beginning of a pristine year, some of us seek to streamline our lives, clean out the closets, simplify.   While we are peacefully sorting through our closets and our lives, stop for a moment and be thankful for all that we have.  And then think – here is a new way to look at some of the extra items we have.

      Red Globe

      Red Globe

Just like our sister city, Ashland, Oregon, has been doing for ten years, we, in Ashland, Virginia, are celebrating our abundance with our Fifth Annual Abundance Swap, a type of swapping garage sale for new or gently used treasures at the Hanover Arts & Activities Center, but no money is exchanged.  Bring whatever you are ready to let go of and take away something that simply strikes your fancy.

Guidelines are simple:  consider bringing three to five new or gently used items from your home or office to give away that you or someone would enjoy as a gift – something not being well used or fully appreciated – something fun, useful, interesting or beautiful.  Then you are able to go home with three to five new and different items.  Please no clothes, jewelry or paperback books.  There is no exchange of money, just sharing of community fellowship and sharing stories about the items and our lives, while munching on a treats and sipping hot cider.

Some memorable items that have been exchanged in the past are the snoring Santa that now delights the younger Doyle family members each holiday season; a pizzelle maker;  an awesome flying pig, a new (used) board game called Win, Lose or Draw, beanie babies; and a jigsaw puzzle to take home and start piecing together with your family.

Consider brightening someone else’s day with a small special gift that you find at the swap.  Remember that the fun of giving gifts during the holidays doesn’t have to stop in December. Use the items you take home to reduce your new purchases and limit the need to use new resources to make new items.  For some of us, it may be a stretch to let go of the idea that it’s not a real gift if it’s not shiny & new from the store.  But sharing is a gift, no matter the size or the cost.  Bring the kids!  Let them bring abundance to swap!  Let’s show our kids a different way of thinking.  As an aside, after you are done swapping, you can enjoy making a paper snowflake or two if the mood strikes.

Any items not claimed at the end of the event will be given to charity.  For questions, visit www.hanoverarts.org, call (804) 798-2728 or email info@hanoverarts.org.
