Tourism

Hanover County, Virginia, located at the crossroads of I-95, I-295, and US Route 1, has much to offer the tourist for a day, weekend or week’s visit. Kings Dominion, one of East Coast’s most popular theme parks, is located at Doswell in northern Hanover. Just across the river in Caroline County, you’ll find Meadow Event Park, the former home of Triple Crown winner Secretariat and the new home of the Virginia State Fair. To the south is Ashland, a charming circa-1850s railroad town that is home to Randolph-Macon College and many hotels and restaurants. To the east, the Hanover Courthouse area is a historical gem, where a young Patrick Henry argued his first important case and his family operated historic Hanover Tavern. Henry’s home, Scotchtown, is in western Hanover, along with the villages of Montpelier and Beaverdam. Winding Brook is a growing tourist destination, with Bass Pro Shops as its anchor. In southeastern Hanover County you will find several Civil War battlefields, Historic Pole Green Church and the Mechanicsville restaurant and shopping districts. Just over the county line is Richmond International Raceway, home to two big NASCAR weekends as well as many other events. The annual Ashland Strawberry Faire and Hanover Tomato Festival also draw many thousands to Hanover County, which is a great place to live, work and visit.
