Hanover Courthouse and Hanover Tavern Offer History, Food and Entertainment

The original Hanover Courthouse was rebuilt

History

The Hanover Courthouse area has been a crossroads of history for nearly three centuries. Existing buildings include the historic Courthouse, where Patrick Henry argued his first big case, the circa-1830s jail, and Hanover Tavern, which includes the Barksdale Theatre.

Historic Hanover County Courthouse Built in 1735, the complex also includes the early 19th-century jail, clerk’s office and the tavern. Here, Patrick Henry struck the first blow against George III in a case called the Parson’s Cause on Dec. 1, 1763. In 1774, Hanover citizens assembled here and adopted the Hanover Resolves. During the Civil War, J.E.B. Stuart was commissioned on the Courthouse green. Right across from Hanover Tavern. The Courthouse is open by appointment. (804) 537-5815.

Old Hanover Jail Built in the 1830s, the old stone jail sits on the site of the original wooden jail. In use until the mid-1950s, the jail consists of two rooms and a passageway, which was thought to be sufficient for criminals. Today it is home to the Hanover Historical Society. Location: at Hanover Courthouse. (804) 537-5815.

Historic Hanover Tavern – There has been a tavern at Hanover Courthouse since 1733, first serving local residents with business at the Courthouse, and later serving long-distance travelers on the main north-south post road.

The oldest part of the existing structure dates from 1791. Hanover Tavern has hosted such luminaries as George Washington, Lord Cornwallis, the Marquis de Lafayette, Edgar Allen Poe, Charles Dickens, and showman P.T.

Barnum. John Shelton, Patrick Henry’s father-in-law owned Hanover Tavern from 1752 to 1764. Patrick Henry and his family lived at the Tavern for several years. Location: 13181 Hanover Courthouse Road. (804) 537-5050. Go to www.hanovertavern.org.

Barksdale Theatre – In 1953, a group of young actors bought the dilapidated Hanover Tavern with the idea of raising their families in the building and conducting theatre performances in the basement. Their efforts saved the Tavern from possible destruction. Barksdale is recognized as our country’s oldest dinner theatre. The Tavern restoration was completed in 2005.

Barksdale Theatre returned in 2006 and continues to conduct plays each year in the Tavern Theatre. Please check the Barksdale website at www.barksdalerichmond.org/hanover.htmlfor the latest performance details.
