Okay, I am done with the winter of 2015, not one to wish time away but I might have to change my mind and hit the fast forward button to get out of this miserable cold weather! Lot’s going on around here though, so here we go!
The Independence Ruritan Club will be having their semi-annual Brunswick Stew sale Saturday, Feb. 28, at the Ruritan Clubhouse located behind Independence Christian Church, 14023 Independence Road (off Route 54 west of Ashland). The stew will be available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for a donation of only $7 a quart. Quantity is limited. To reserve yours in advance, call (804) 798-5171 or (804) 798-6579 by Thursday, Feb. 26. The proceeds from this activity will help provide several scholarships for the Class of 2015 at Patrick Henry High School. In conjunction with this stew sale the Disciples Women of Independence Church are having a bake sale. The ladies are great cooks and they sell out fast. Come early to get the best selection.
The Beaverdam Ruritan Club presents a Ruritan of the Year Award to members of the Club that have shown great dedication. For 2014, Ron Nanni and David Luck (pictured left to right) were both presented with the Ruritan of the Year Award for their excellent service to the club. The “Old Firehouse Concert Series” is excited to sponsor ‘Barely Above Sea Level’ from Raleigh, N.C. at their coffeehouse Saturday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. at the Zion Christian Center. This family-focused group plays classic country and modern Americana. Cost is $5 for adults; under age 18 are free. Hot beverages and snacks are provided. The Friends of the Montpelier Branch Library have set the dates for their book sales for 2015. The book sales are their primary fundraiser for the branch and they invite shoppers, browsers and collectors of all ages and interests. They have a large selection of books, both hard cover and paper backs. Cost is simply a donation. Monies collected are used to sponsor various library activities throughout the year including Dr. Seuss’ Birthday Extravaganza and the Summer Reading Challenge.
Spring 2015 will be held in the Montpelier Center Ballroom (across the hall from the library) Friday, April 10 from noon to 6 p.m. and Saturday, April 11 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Preview Sale for members Friday, April 10 from 10 a.m. to noon.
