Since 2004, there’s at least one Saturday in October when Ashlanders should not sleep in – because the Ashland Harvest Run & Pumpkin Walk begins early! October 21, participants in the 10k-5k run and 1 mile walk assemble at Carter Park before 8 a.m. to begin a scenic, winding route along the railroad tracks, around the Randolph-Macon campus and through town streets. The 10k and 5k routes are chip-timed and serve as marathon qualifying events. The run is planned by a group of women, small in number and big in energy. The GFWC Ashcake Woman’s Club organizes the race to raise funds to support local groups. Because of the generous contributions of many businesses and individuals, over the years, the race has generated over $165,000! This year’s proceeds will be given to:
- CIRCLES Ashland – offering a community-based approach to solving poverty and homelessness
- Interfaith Free Clinic – providing free medical and dental care to lower income persons
- Wings of Hope Ranch – a horse rescue organization that in turn provides riding opportunities for children facing challenges and conflicts
There’s a church challenge with the largest church group receiving a cash award. Medals are given to the top 2 men and women in both the 10k and 5k. Register early to ensure you receive an event T-shirt. Visit AshlandHarvestRun.com for more information and to register individually or for a group.
