Tough Mudder Virginia will be having a 10-12 mile obstacle ourse race designed by British Special Forces to test all around strength, staminia, teamwork and mental grit. The Mechanicsville Chapter 5407 of AARP will hold its Annual Picnic next Tuesday June 13 at the Moose Lodge Picnic Shelter located behind the Lodge building at 7167 Flag Lane in Mechanicsville, Virginia 23111. We will meet from 10a.m. to whenever we finish, generally somewhat after noontime. If coming from the Mechanicsville Turnpike, turn onto Bell Creek Road, past BJ’s on the left and Home Depot and Target on the right, – to the stoplight. Continue through the light to the road immediately on your right. Turn onto Flag Lane. While the goal of the local chapter is to address the concerns of seniors in the Mechanicsville area, there will be no formal program, but there will be fun and games and great food available. Dog Walk and Obedience Program Offered

Looking to get a few extra steps on your fitness tracker, while spending time with your canine companion? Fluffy and Me Pack Walk and Basic Obedience offers both of these, along with coaching from a dog trainer as well. Designed to help pet owners understand their dog and form a closer bond through weekly structured pack walks through the scenic trails at Pole Green Park. Watch your dog’s leash manners improve with each walk! Class starts with a 45 minute pack walk on the nature trail and ends with 30 minutes of training/relaxation under the direction of Amanda McKenna of Alpha Love Dog Training. Upcoming session meets Saturdays, June 3 through June 17 at Pole Green Park, 6 to 7:15p.m. Cost is $55.

September 12- November 14

Registration is underway for the 29 session of the Citizens Police Academy, which will take place from September 12 through November 14. The academy will be held at the Sheriff’s Office every Tuesday between the hours of 6:30 and 9:30 p.m., and is free of charge.  The deadline to apply is July 15. The program is available to Hanover residents, business owners, or employees who are at least 18 years of age. Applicants must be willing to submit to a background check. Class size is limited and applicants will be selected on a first-come, first accepted basis. Those interested are urged to download an application, which needs to be notarized, at, or contact Mrs. Lisa Hancock at (804) 365-6112 for an application or additional information. The academy is designed to give participants an inside look into the law enforcement operations of the Sheriff’s Office in an effort to develop positive and productive relationships with the citizens in our community.  The training includes visual presentations, question-and-answer sessions, tours, and a variety of practical exercises.
