Mechanicsville Chapter 5407 of AARP

The Mechanicsville Chapter 5407 of AARP will meet at our new sponsoring organization, the First Union Baptist Church at Pole Green Road in Mechanicsville from 10 to Noon.  Our featured speaker will be Mrs. Patricia Jones Jackson from the Virginia AARP Executive Board, who will speak on Prepare to Care as a Caregiver. Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) classes

This fall, basic Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) classes will be held at the Hanover Fire/EMS Administration building at 13326 Hanover Courthouse Road just north of the Courthouse. These classes are free. Sessions will be held on Wednesdays September 13, 20, 27 and October 4 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. and Saturdays September 16 and 30 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Attendance at all sessions is necessary for graduation. You will learn about the origins of CERT, how to identify risks in your home and neighborhood, disaster preparedness, fire extinguishers, basic first aid and light search & rescue, among other subjects. Over 200 Hanover residents have already taken this class and more than 50 have gone on to join the CERT Unit as volunteers under Hanover Fire/EMS.  Members assist in events and with higher training, can also be deployed to incidents such as search and rescue, traffic control, etc. The lower age limit for the class is 17 and requires a parent/guardian attending the sessions.  There is no physical requirement for this hands-on class.  To sign up, please e-mail HanoverCoCERT@gmail.com. The Hanover TRIAD invites anyone and everyone concerned about their safety in meeting places to come and hear a presentation by a certified crime specialist.  September 14, 1:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 800 Thompson Street, Ashland, VA.  RICK ARRINGTON will be talking about preparing, responding and dealing with security in places of worship, work and home.  This is a FREE one hour event.
