Reunion at Rural Plains: The Return of Robert Robertson

The Rural Plains Foundation announces the presentation of an original drama, “Reunion at Rural Plains: The Return of Robert Robertson,” at 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 22.  The program will be presented on the lawn in front of the Shelton House at the Totopotomoy Creek Battlefield at Rural Plains, 7273 Studley Road, Mechanicsville. Seating will be available, or visitors can bring lawn chairs or blankets. The program is free. Donations for the continued restoration of the house will be gratefully accepted. Following the program, the house will be open for tours. In the event of rain, the drama will be presented at Enon United Methodist Church at 6156 Studley Road, Mechanicsville.

Flag Retirement Ceremony

The Beaverdam American Legion Post 90 will conduct a Flag Retirement Ceremony at the Post Sunday, Oct. 22 at 4 p.m. Old tattered, worn flags will be retired at this time. Flags may be dropped off at the Post at any time in the receptacle behind the Post.  All persons are invited to this Ceremony. The Post is located at 17662 Beaver Dam Rd.

Atlee Library Friends’ Fall Book Sale

The Atlee Library Friends’ Fall Book Sale will be Friday, October 27, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday¸ October 28, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Atlee Library’s meeting rooms. A Preview Sale for Current Members Only, will be Thursday, October 26, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. You are welcome to join the Friends at the door! A huge selection of well sorted books and other media will be available at great prices. All hardback books, CDs, DVDs and books-on-tape are $1 each. All paperback books and VHS tapes are only 50 cents each. If you have your old library bag, you can fill it for $12. Our current smaller bags you can fill for $10! On Saturday ONLY, you can fill a paper grocery bag for $5. During the Fall Book Sale, the Friends of Atlee Library are sponsoring a Food Drive, collecting nonperishable food, toiletries, paper goods, and cleaning products for the Mechanicsville Churches Emergency Functions (MCEF). Please bring a donation to the library, and we will deliver all the donations to MCEF. Thank you for your generosity for this worthy cause! Ashland Beekeepers Association

The Ashland Beekeepers Association is offering a free informational seminar about pollinators, honey bees and beekeeping.  Pollinators are critical to our agriculture and are responsible for almost 1/3 of what we eat. Learn about how to maintain a pollinator-friendly yard; what it’s like to “Bee” a Keeper of honey bees; and what is needed to do so. If you are thinking about becoming a beekeeper in 2018, the fall of 2017 is when you need to prepare.  This seminar is to help you decide if you really want to manage hives of honey bees. The seminar will run from 9 a.m. – noon.  Location: Family Life Baptist Church, 206 S. Washington Hwy., Ashland, VA.  Seating is limited so you must register by Oct 23. This event will be at the Post starting at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 29.  There will be several military vehicles on display.
