Join Gallery Flux for our solo show featuring North Carolina artist Matthew Scott Myers. He describes his paintings as Saturated Realism, or sometimes Acidism, and then sometimes impressionism. Scott is a self-taught artist, looking to capture the vibrant world he sees around himself. The exhibit will be full of different scenes and subjects, but it all comes together. Family Fun Day and Drew Goodman Memorial Blood Drive

Please join us for the 5th Annual Family Fun Day and Drew Goodman Memorial Blood Drive on September 9, to raise awareness for childhood cancer. We will be raising money for local childhood charities like ASK Childhood Cancer Foundation and Special Love. There will be $7 chicken dinners, a bake sale, cake walk, games, vendors and so much more. Virginia Blood Service Mobile will be there to collect blood donations in memory of Drew Goodman. The event runs from 11-3 p.m. Join us for a day of fun, food and to support these local charities.

Family Fun Day

The Beaverdam Volunteer Fire Company will host a Family Fun Day Sunday, September 10, from 11-3 p.m. at Station Two, 16150 Trainham Road, Beaverdam. All ages welcome. Chicken dinners available for purchase at $7.  The event will feature fire truck & ambulance displays, kid’s games & entertainment, safety education, a bake sale, a silent auction and family fun. Their goals include fun, learning and increasing awareness of Childhood Cancer issues.  All proceeds from this Community Event will benefit the ASK Childhood Cancer Foundation, and Special Love, who support children diagnosed with cancer, and their families.  At the Firehouse we will also host a Drew Goodman Memorial Blood Drive.  Please come help with the Blood Bank’s current needs.

Join us at Gallery Flux on September 10, from 1-2:30p.m., where you will have the opportunity view Jennifer Young’s new body of work while listening to her talk about her experience visiting Maine for the first time as an artist in residence. Young spent two-weeks of concentrated time getting to know Maine’s largest island and its stunning landscape. By immersing herself in the island life and exploring the natural landscape protected by the Vinalhaven Land Trust, she was able to begin a body of work on location which she continues to develop in the studio. 307-B England Street, Ashland , VA.

Hanover County’s 9/11 Memorial Ceremony

The public is invited to attend Hanover County’s 9/11 Memorial Ceremony on Monday, September 11 at 9 a.m. This event will be held in front of the new Hanover County Court Complex in the Rt. 301 Government Center at 7530 County Complex Road, Hanover, VA.

This annual event, held in partnership with Woodmen of the World (WOW), focuses on the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice saving others during the terrorist attacks on our nation.  Guest speakers include: Ms. Angela Kelly-Wiecek, Chairman of the Hanover Board of Supervisors, Mr. Wayne Anderson, Regional Manager of Woodmen of the World, Lt. Colonel Allen Davidson, Hanover County Sheriff’s Department, and Chief Jethro Piland, Hanover County Fire/EMS.  In addition, the Hanover County Sheriff-Fire/EMS Honor Guard, will participate in the ceremony. Mechanicsville Chapter 5407 of AARP

Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) classes

This fall, basic Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) classes will be held at the Hanover Fire/EMS Administration building at 13326 Hanover Courthouse Road just north of the Courthouse. These classes are free. Sessions will be held on Wednesdays September 13, 20, 27 and October 4 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. and Saturdays September 16 and 30 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Attendance at all sessions is necessary for graduation. You will learn about the origins of CERT, how to identify risks in your home and neighborhood, disaster preparedness, fire extinguishers, basic first aid and light search & rescue, among other subjects. Over 200 Hanover residents have already taken this class and more than 50 have gone on to join the CERT Unit as volunteers under Hanover Fire/EMS.  Members assist in events and with higher training, can also be deployed to incidents such as search and rescue, traffic control, etc. The lower age limit for the class is 17 and requires a parent/guardian attending the sessions.  There is no physical requirement for this hands-on class.  To sign up, please e-mail The registration deadline is September 10.
