Editorial: Head to the polls

Posted on Thursday, May 1, 2014 at 3:00 pm

Ashland’s townspeople have the chance to vote for two members of town council next Tuesday when polls here open. We hope you will take advantage of the opportunity to do so.

It has been a rather quiet election season. Aside from a few scattered yard signs throughout town, citizens might not even know an election’s afoot, unless, of course, they read the candidate profiles that ran in this paper last month.

Several dozen citizens attended a candidates’ forum Tuesday to ask their questions face to face. If you missed the opportunity to engage with the three candidates, you can at least hear their responses by visiting the Town of Ashland website (; a link to the forum is on the homepage.

While it may be true that no single issue – like a looming Walmart – is driving this year’s elections, it’s no less important to visit the polls.
Actions by local government impact taxpayers and citizens in more tangible ways than any other level of government, whether it be through setting local taxes, courting the next big job creator to come to town or approving funding to repair the local town pool. The people elected Tuesday will have a direct impact on life in Ashland.

Please exercise your democratic duty.
