National Fire Prevention Week occurs Oct. 5 to Oct. 11 this year. In recognition, the H-P is taking a look at a pair of local firefighters, one this week and one next. The current volunteer district chief at the Beaverdam fire station is Hanover native Donald "D.J." Epps Jr. Epps graduated from Atlee High School in 2001. Upon turning 18, he moved over to Beaverdam and joined up with the station. It seemed only natural, as his grandfather worked for the City of Richmond Fire Department, and several other relatives had been members of the Beaverdam station.
