Cargile
Louis Laymon "Buddy" Cargile, Jr., of Mechanicsville, born in Natchez, Miss. July 6, 1927, the son of the late Louis L. Cargile Sr. and Gladys McCrea Cargile, passed away Friday, Aug. 27, 2010. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Lydia Ann McKay Cargile, and is survived by one brother-in-law, two nephews, one niece, several great-nieces, and many devoted friends whose love and support were greatly appreciated by him. Buddy attended LSU before enlisting in the Marine Corps serving as a cryptographer under the Chief of Naval Operations during the occupation of Japan, China and Guam. He was recalled into service for the Korean War. Upon leaving the Marines, he went to work for Government Intelligence in Washington, D.C. leaving in 1958 to work at the Reynolds Metals Corp H.Q. in Richmond, retiring in 1985 after 27 years of service. A Mason for 60 years, he belonged to the Concordia No. 305 F&A.M. in Vadalia, La.; Washington Henry No. 344 A.F.&A.M.; Manchester Royal Arch No. 48, and in 1974 was Worshipful Master of Hellinic No. 249 A.F.&A.M. which was later absorbed into Metropolitan No. 11. He was also a life member of the Mechanicsville VFW Post 9808. The family will receive friends at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2010. Graveside services were held Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2010 at Riverview Cemetery. The Reverend Mark D. Miller officiated. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 4240 Park Place Court, Glen Allen, VA 23058.
Grindstaff
William Henry "Cowboy" Grindstaff, born June 10, 1935, passed away Aug. 26, 2010. He was preceded in death by his son, William Roy Grindstaff; his parents, Henry and Maggie Grindstaff; his two sisters, Lena Bass and Blanche Taylor. He is survived by his wife, Shirley; his daughters, Faye Hampton (Charles) and Ann Gates (John); his son, Jimmy Grindstaff (Anne); his grandchildren, Melissa, Chris, David and John Henry; and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Lawson Grindstaff; and sister, Lola Hooper. He was a well-known local auctioneer, an active member of VAA and served in the National Guard. He was also well known by friends as Cowboy for his western wear and Stetson hats. The family received guests Saturday, Aug. 28 and Sunday, Aug. 29 at Bennett Funeral Home, Mechanicsville, where funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 30. Interment followed in Greenwood Memorial Park.
Lord
George Leroy Lord, Jr., departed this life Aug. 29, 2010. He was born Nov. 1, 1920 in Goshen, N.Y., to the late George "Roy" and Myrtle V. Lord; and was also preceded in death by three sisters, Ann Rau, Mildred Chara and Myrtle Grogan. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Mildred Walker Lord; son, George "Roddy" Lord of Amarillo, Texas; as well as many loving nieces and nephews. George was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII serving in the Pacific Theater. Before the war, George attended Aeronautical School of Engineering at Yale University. After the war, he finished his degree in engineering. George worked for Chance Vought, which became Lockheed Martin, for 35 years, developing and designing aircraft for the Navy and Air Force, retiring in 1977. After 50 years of residing in the Dallas, Texas area, George and Mildred moved to Mechanicsville in 1996 to be closer to family. Family received friends Tuesday at the Mechanicsville Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, where services were held Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2010. Interment Washington Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society or to a charity of your choice.
Shroyer
Novelene Howard Shroyer, 86, of Covenant Woods, Mechanicsville, widow of Dr. Donald C. Shroyer, went to be with the Lord Thursday, Aug. 26, 2010. She is survived by her son, Michael Linden Shroyer and his wife, Debra, of Utah; her daughter, Suzanne Shroyer Harris and her husband, Stephen, of North Carolina; her former daughter-in-law, Mary E. Shroyer; three grandchildren, Heather S. Dowdy, Laurel S. Hanke and M. Linden Shroyer II; five great-grandchildren; and her sister, Lila H. Irby and her husband, Moreland R. Irby Jr. She was preceded in death by her brother, Randall R. Howard, and is survived by his children: niece, Sheryl L. Eickelberg, and nephew, Steven R. Howard. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Nancy Virginia Shroyer Bain and her six children. She served in the U.S. Navy during WWII as a WAVE. Mrs. Shroyer gave much of her time volunteering at Covenant Woods. She was an avid knitter and used her talent to benefit both those she loved and those in need. The family received friends Sunday at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, where services were held Monday, Aug. 30. Interment will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, in Arlington National Cemetery. Tester
Barbara Ann Barnes Tester, 76, of Highland Springs, our beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend, entered into eternal rest peacefully at her home Monday, Aug. 23, 2010. She was born to the late Dester and Bettie Barnes Aug. 2, 1934 in Angier, N.C. Barbara graduated from Angier High School in 1952. She enjoyed sports and played on her high school basketball team. Barbara was retired from real estate and property management and was an avid Bridge player. She is survived by her sisters, Homezell Gilliam of Portsmouth, Va., Geraldine Tilley of Fuquay-Varina, N.C., and Martha Lou Winn of Zuni, Va.; daughters, Jan Franck and Sandra Morris; granddaughters, Stephanie Mosley and Ashley Rae Morris; and great-grandson, Logan Mosley, all of Richmond. The family received friends to celebrate her life Wednesday, Aug. 25, at the Mechanicsville Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, Mechanicsville, where services were held Thursday, Aug. 26, 2010. Interment Hanover Memorial Park. She was a ray of sunshine and a joy to all that knew her. She will be deeply missed.
York
Darrell Eugene York, of Mechanicsville, was born in Marietta, Ga. to Mary Ellen Wright and Willard York July 21, 1939; he passed away Aug. 18, 2010. Darrell is preceded in death by his parents, and by his wife Brenda Corker York. Survived are Darrell's only son, Matthew York; brothers, Joe Labrador, Juan Labrador, Leon Labrador, Tony Labrador, and Ben Labrador, all of Va., and brother Troy York of Sautee, Ga.; sisters Margie York O'Malley of Cleveland, Ga., and Dixie York Cook of Tucker, Ga. Darrell grew up in Richmond, Va. He worked as a security guard for many years. After retiring, he joined his brother Ben's musical band, Old Dominion Review, where he earned the name Gabby. He loved to talk, sing, and be a comedian. Darrell was a Christian man and was always encouraging others to know his Lord, his source of strength, comfort, and correction. Darrell will be buried Sept. 5, 2010 at 3 p.m. His minister and family will be conducting a graveside service.
Zook
Dorothy "Dot" L. Zook, 73, of Ashland, died Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2010. She was loved by many and is no longer suffering any pain. She is preceded in death by a son, Jeff Zook, of Lancaster, Pa. and her parents, Gilbert and Vesta Helmuth, of Streetsboro, Ohio. She is survived by her husband, Gilbert Zook, of Ashland, and her sons and their families, Larry and Christina Zook, of Tewksbury, Mass.; Jerry and Daune Zook; her granddaughters, Raleigh and Sawyer Zook; her grandson, Noah Zook, all of Ashland; and her brother and his family, Willard and Loretta Helmuth of Marshville, N.C. Dorothy retired from the Post-Partum Unit of Henrico Doctor's Hospital, Forest Campus in Richmond. She was active in the Ashland Church of God for many years. Family received friends at the Ashland Church of God in Ashland, Friday, Aug. 27. A service to celebrate her life was conducted Saturday, Aug. 28, also at Ashland Church of God. Graveside services followed at Signal Memorial Park in Hanover. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be given to the Ashland Church of God Building Fund, 407 Myrtle Street, Ashland, VA 23005.
