Mary B. Baumgardner, of Mechanicsville, passed away peacefully with family and dear friends present Feb. 23, 2014 at the age of 82. Born in Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of Mervin E. Bull and Edna G. Bull, sister to Celia Wiley, Anna Lawson, and dear brother, Albert Bull, all who predeceased her. Mrs. Baumgardner leaves behind her dearly loved and devoted husband, Janna Rockwell Baumgardner of who she would have celebrated their 60th anniversary April 17, 2014. She leaves behind her beloved daughter Patricia Sheehan and husband Tom, her treasured granddaughter Shannon Sheets and Travis, and her precious great grandsons, Connor Rockwell and Fletcher Finnigan Sheets. She also leaves behind one surviving brother, Nevin Bull of Front Royal, Va., endeared sister-in-law, Grace Bull, numerous nieces and nephews, and her much loved dog, Sam. She loved being around people and no one was a stranger to her. She will be remembered for her generosity, kindness, wit and humor, unselfishness, and her ability to love unconditionally. She enjoyed bowling, playing cards, crossword puzzles, playing scrabble with her daughter and granddaughter, delivering Meals on Wheels, plus volunteering Friday nights with bingo for VFW Post 9808. She was also a member of the VFW Post 9808 Women’s Auxiliary. The family received friends, Thursday, Feb. 27, 2014 at The Monaghan Funeral Home, 7300 Creighton Parkway, Mechanicsville, where a Celebration of Mary’s life will be held, 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 28, 2014. Reception to follow at The VFW Post 9808. Renie Ward Brooks, departed this life Feb. 19, 2014, at the age of 97, in Pleasantview, Tenn. She was preceded in death by her husband, Augustine Brooks. She leaves to cherish her memory her son, William A. Brooks, Sr. (Janet); grandchildren, Lori Wisong (Lloyd) of Tennessee, William A. Brooks Jr. of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and four great-grandchildren. The family received friends Sunday, Feb. 23, at the Mechanicsville Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home. Graveside services were held Monday, Feb. 24, at Oakwood Cemetery. Donald Guy “Ducky” Nash, 74, of King William, passed away Friday, Feb. 14, 2014, with his family by his side. He was preceded in death by his parents, Soyars and Agnes Nash of Rockville, Va.; and one grandchild, Kristopher Trautman. He served in special services in the U.S. Navy, playing baseball. He retired from Jerry Brothers Belting Company in 2004 after 42 years. He was a member of the Hybla Hunt Club in King William and loved hunting and his hunting dogs. He was also an avid sports fan. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Shirley D. Nash; daughters, Karen Nash and spouse, Jeffrey Trautman, and Donna N. Lilly and her spouse, Benjamin Lilly; five grandchildren, Katelyn, Andrew and Ashlynn Lilly, Nicole and Joshua Trautman. Also surviving is his sister, Delmar N. Selden; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation was Saturday, Feb. 22, at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, where services were held. William T. “Pat” Patrick, 74, of Mechanicsville, departed this world peacefully, at his home surrounded by his family, Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014. A devoted husband, caring father and grandfather, he is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Phyllis; his three children, Stacey Giles (Rick), Trey Patrick and Michael Patrick (Brandi); seven grandchildren, Lindsey and Shane Giles, Reagan, Michael, Mason, Max and Maddox Patrick; and his devoted brother-in-law, Steve Chickos. Pat loved life and touched many. He was the founder of the Patrick Family of Auto Dealerships and was 2004 Time Magazine’s Quality Dealer of the Year for Virginia, and a 1961 graduate of MCV School of Pharmacy. He also served on a variety of boards, including the Richmond Automobile Dealers’ Association (past President), Virginia Automobile Dealers’ Association, Good Neighbor Village, Richmond Metro Project, Richmond Pharmaceutical Company, Hanover Education Foundation, Richmond Memorial Foundation (board of trustees, President Emeritus), Bon Secours, Richmond Health System Acute Care, Retail Merchants Association (Distinguished Retailer of the Year for 2007), Bon Secours Memorial Regional Medical Center, Henrico East Business Council (past President), Joint Hospital Board of Directors for Bon Secours Richmond Health Systems (past Chairman), as well as past Advisory Board Chairman for Memorial Regional Hospital. Pat was also a lifetime member of the Virginia Jaycees, a member of the Sandston Rotary Club since 1985 (15 years perfect attendance), recipient of the Innsbrook Rotary Business Leadership Award, past Chairman of the Better Business Bureau, and was a past member of the Motor Vehicle Dealer Board (one of seven franchised dealers appointed by the governor). Fortunate to be a part of so many organizations, Pat had a passion for personal relationships and loved to serve others. He would be the first to say that he received far more than he gave. In his words, he lived a life “knee-deep in grace,” and despite his many accomplishments, he considered his family his greatest gift of all. The family received friends Sunday, Feb. 23, 2014 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 8200 Woodman Road, with a memorial service immediately following. A Mass and Christian Burial will also be held at Our Lady of Lourdes Monday, Feb. 24, 2014. Interment Hanover Memorial Park. Adele Clark Poythress, 86, of Mechanicsville, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Francis Poythress; son, John Francis Jr.; and daughter, Rita Seal. Survived by two daughters, Lura Johnson (Stan) and Susan Ballard (Dennis); seven grandchildren, Kevin and Ross Johnson, Russell, Louis and Donna Ballard, Shaun Seal and Denise Matthews (Mike); two great-grandchildren, Ryan and Madison Matthews; as well as two siblings, Yvonne Ramage and Eugene Clark. Adele loved her family, friends and flowers. Graveside services were held Friday, Feb. 21, 2014, at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
Robert J. Provo, left this world on his own terms, Feb. 21, 2014. He is survived by two sons, James and Jason Provo. Robbie was a proud grandfather. Harry L. Smith, Jr., 61, of Ashland, passed away Feb. 20, 2014. He was preceded in death by his father, Harry L. Smith, Sr. He is survived by his mother, Gladys; step-dad, Glenn Middlebrook; and brother, Barry Lee Smith. Harry was a self-employed handyman. He was a veteran of the U.S. Coastguard and did four years of service. He was an avid swimmer, salutatorian of his high school graduating class and graduated from Washington & Lee University in Lexington, VA with Honors. Harry received his Master’s degree at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va. He was lettered in football at Washington & Lee University. Harry was a wonderful son. Memorial services took place Sunday, Feb. 24, 2014 at the Nelsen Funeral Home, Reid Chapel, Ashland. Interment at Signal Hill Memorial Park at a later date. Helen Loving Thurston, of Ashland, passed away Feb. 21, 2014 at the age of 94. She was preceded in death by her husband, L. Marvin Thurston; three brothers, Sherman, Julian and Floyd Loving; and one sister, Mildred Eddleton. She is survived by her two sons, Richard M. Thurston and Charles R. Thurston (Jean); Sharon Loving, a cousin she helped raise; five grandsons, Mark (Laura), Scott (Sandy), Carl, Chris (Courtney) and Michael (Jamie); 12 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Louise Burnett, Virginia Gammon and Catherine Sheiner. After the death of her husband she volunteered for almost 30 years at Henrico Doctor’s Hospital Parham Road, where she retired in October 2013. She was a lifetime member and supporter of Kenwood United Methodist Church, where among other duties taught Sunday school for 50 years. The family received friends at the Nelsen Funeral Home, Ashland, Sunday, Feb. 23, 2014. Funeral Services were held at Kenwood United Methodist Church Monday, Feb. 24, 2014. James Michael Williams, 49, of Mechanicsville, was called Home to be with the Lord Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2014. He is survived by his parents, Erma and Millard Williams; sister, Kim Karnes (Frank); one niece, Kelsie; two nephews, Trey and Kody. The family received friends Sunday, Feb. 23, 2014 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, where funeral services were held. Interment private.
Andrew Joseph “Drew” Yanishak III, 37, of Mechanicsville, departed this life Friday, Feb. 21, 2014, after a six-year battle with brain cancer. He is survived by his parents, Andrew Joseph Yanishak Jr. and Virginia S. Yanishak; his loving wife, Charity Yanishak; and his two daughters, Emma Sophie and Claire Elizabeth. Drew worked at Markel Corporation for 10 years as an IT professional. He will be remembered as a beloved father, husband, son, and friend, who touched the lives of everyone he met. The family received friends Monday at the Mechanicsville Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home.
