Ronnie “Doc” Burton, 62, of King William, passed away Jan. 24, 2014. He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl L. and Evelyn D. Burton; infant son, Christopher E. Burton; and infant granddaughter, Bryana N. Burton; and is survived by his wife of 24 years, Susan W. Burton; son, Thomas D. Burton; daughter, Kelly N. Burton; and aunt, Jean E. Johnston. Upon retirement with 28 years of service as a fixer with Philip Morris USA, he was the owner of Doc’s Lawn Service and was a member of Pole Green Church of Christ. The family received friends Sunday, Jan. 26, 2014 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, with services. Interment at Union Baptist Church in Amelia at a later date.
Louise Edwards Covey, 89, of Mechanicsville, formerly of Henrico, daughter of Ada and Howard Edwards, went to be with the Lord Jan. 27, 2014. She was predeceased by her husbands, Joshua B. Swanner and Walter L. Covey; grandchildren, Lisa Magruder and Jamie Covey; sisters, Mary E. May, Delores A. Edwards and Betty Jane Wyatt. She is survived by her children, Sharon S. Cruea (Jerry), Patricia Taylor, Joan Moore (David), Walter V. Covey (Mary), Peggy Watkins, Larry H. Covey, Robin Freeman (Tony); 14 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren; sisters, Mabel Brooks and Juanita Bryan (Doug); and brother, Howard Edwards Jr. (Shirley). She devoted her life to her family. She will be greatly missed. The family received friends Wednesday, Jan. 29, at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, where services were held Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014. Berkley “Bucky” Jellie, 92, of Henrico, passed peacefully at his home Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2014. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 49 years, Helen Marshall Jellie, and his second wife of 14 years, Sadie Hitchcock Rosenbaum Jellie; and is survived by his two stepsons, Henry Rosenbaum and his wife, Cathy, and Danny Rosenbaum and his wife, Lisa; nine grandchildren; a nephew, Billy Jellie and his wife, Carol; as well as devoted friends, John Campbell, Mark and Frida Damron, Daphne Ellenberger and Lewis Morgan. Bucky was proud to have served his country during WWII with the U.S. Naval Air Force, Fleet Air Wing 6. He was a flight engineer on the PBY-5A known as the “Eyes of the Navy.” Bucky belonged to the ACCA Shrine as a member of the motor patrol and ceremonial cast. He was a 32nd Degree Mason, member of Henrico Union Lodge #130 AF & AM for 64 years, life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars #9808, Richmond East Moose Lodge, #1947, and OES Naomi Chapter #4. Bucky retired from VEPCO after 29 years of service. He enjoyed traveling, fishing, and relaxing with friends at Gwynn’s Island. The family received friends Sunday, with a Masonic service at the Mechanicsville Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, where services were held Monday, Jan. 27, 2014. Carolyn Fleming Jones, 66, of Montpelier, was received unto the Lord Jan. 22, 2014. She was preceded in death by her father, James H. Fleming of Bumpass. She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Donald N. Jones; her mother, Evelyn H. Fleming of Bumpass; sister, Mary A. Fleming of Mechanicsville; daughter, Sherry J. Barlow and her husband, Kevin, of Ruther Glen; daughter, Christa J. Hess and her husband, Greg, of Mechanicsville; four grandchildren, Allyson Taylor Wickham, Abigail Reid Wickham, Hunter Allen Hess and Cadence Ashby Hess; and her devoted dachshund, Buddie. Carolyn was a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church in Montpelier, where she sang in the choir. She had a love and talent for music having played the organ for many years and often playing duets with her sister on the piano. She was a dedicated employee of W.T. Jones and Sons, Inc. Lumber Company in Ruther Glen. The family received friends Friday, Jan. 24, at Bliley’s-Staples Mill. Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 25, at Shiloh United Methodist Church, Montpelier. Darrel Duane Lane, 66, of Hanover, died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2014. He is survived by his daughter, V. DeAnne Walsh and son-in-law, Dennis; mother, Marie Lane Radel; siblings, Marilyn Cahoy, Vera Bares and husband, Ray, Gary Lane and wife, Sharon; and his nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Glen Lane; and brother-in-law, Ray Cahoy. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. Martha Simpson Creasy Long, born on Christmas Eve, 1919, was 94 when she departed this earth Jan. 17, 2014. She was preceded in death by her husband, Odell; and by her sweet mother, Janie Creasy; all of her brothers and sisters, except one, and grandson, Christopher Brian Long. She leaves behind her children, Ronald Odell Long (Jean), Nancy Lee Bishop (George), V. Eileen Long (Barry Allen); grandchildren, Angela Trammell, Brett Huber (Patty), Rebecca Seo (John), Margaret Thompson (Chris), Gail Wood (Harry), George Bishop (Tricia), Dale Bishop (Erin), Brandon Allen (Jamie), Emily Elizabeth Kitchens (Matthew), Cynthia Heather Fredrickson; and great-grandchildren, Hannah Austin, Caleb, Anna Kate, Elliya Doss, Phin and Ezra, Ty, Grace, Isaac, Will, Scott, Ann Claire, Camille, Will, Mavis, Madison, Macy, Emma; sister, Margaret Stillman “Snookie,” devoted family members, Barbara Long, Carroll Lee Carroll, Becky Stanger (Keith), Verne, Reese; and numerous nieces, nephews and their families, all whom she loved equally with all of her heart; special friends, Joe Taylor, Harriet Ropelewski, Robin Fitzsimmons, Art and Pauline Casavant, and Mary Lampy; and her little dog, Happy. Phyliss Parker Mason, 84, of Bumpass, the widow of George J. Mason, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2014. She is survived by a daughter, Judy B. Searls (Jimmy); a granddaughter, Tammy Brooks (Gerard); a grandson, Wayne Trainham, Jr.; four great-grandchildren, Mandel, Daniel, Dajia and Drayken; three stepdaughters, Diane Pitts (Clyde), Pat Jackson (David) and Sue Parker; seven step grandchildren; 13 step great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Dean and Christopher Parker. She was preceded in death by a stepson, David Mason; step son-in-law, Doug Parker; and sister, Mildred Parker. Mrs. Mason retired from SunTrust Bank. Doris Mae Harris Wickham O’Neill, 77, passed away Monday, Jan. 20, 2014. Doris Mae will be interned at Fork Episcopal Church, 12566 Old Ridge Road, Doswell. Born and raised in Hanover County, Doris Mae spent her career as a teacher at Tuckahoe Middle School in Henrico County where she taught in and chaired the history department and enjoyed coaching the girls’ softball and basketball teams. She is preceded by her parents, Owen Willard Harris and Elma May Lowry Harris Hadad. Mae is survived by her husband, Tom; son, James Spencer Wickham, Jr. (Melodie) and daughters, Karen Mae Hyman (Roger), Merrie W. Cosby (Erich), Carol W. Adams (John), Robin W. Michael Irvin Parrish, 58, of Montpelier, received his healing after a courageous battle with cancer Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2014. He is survived by the love of his life, his wife, Rose Napier Parrish. Standing by his side through all of his battles were his son, David Parrish (Jenni); and his daughters, Victoria Batsch and Stacey Terry. He is also survived by his son, John Parrish (Nicole). He leaves behind the apple of his eye, his grandson, Joshua Batsch and grand-daughters, Mackenzie and Karleigh Parrish. He is survived by his brother, Todd Parrish (Pat); and by Robert and Leigh Pemberton who were lifetime friends whom he loved as brothers. The family received friends at the Mt. Ruth Ann Campbell Sparks, 88, of Mechanicsville, ascended into heaven, Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014. Among those awaiting her is her beloved husband, Isaac Ralph Sparks; son, Ralph Steven Sparks; her sister, parents, and many relatives and friends. Ruth was born in East Tennessee in 1925. She married her high school sweetheart in 1945, and they eventually made their way to Richmond to raise their three children. She is survived by her son, Marty Sparks (Mary) of New Kent, Va., daughter, Suzanne Newsome (Chuck) of Mechanicsville; grandchildren, Brian Sparks, Ashley Newsome, Austin Newsome, and Lindsay Sparks; brother, Joe Campbell (Doris) of Titusville, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews. As a young woman, Ruth was artistic and loved ceramics. She loved music, jokes, and entertainment. She was a wonderful cook. She was steadfast after losing a husband and son many years ago. She was strong in spirit and self-reliant. She was always witty, kind, loving and tolerant of all. Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 23 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home. The family received friends one hour prior to service. Interment Washington Memorial Park.
Linnie Agee Taylor, 74, of Mechanicsville, a much loved wife, mother and grandmother, passed away suddenly Thursday, Jan. 16, 2014. She was preceded in death by her son, Robert “Dwayne” Taylor; and mother, Lillian Faulkner. Left to cherish her memory is her beloved husband of 55 years, Robert Taylor; daughter, Kim Shackelford; granddaughter, Allison Marie Taylor; grandson, Robert Brandon Shackelford; two sisters, Carol Simpson and Betty Guy; and many nieces, nephews and other extended family members. Linnie had many passions in life, number one was her family, number two was the beach. She never met a stranger.
