Call it “The Lynchburg Problem.”
Each of the last four years, Randolph-Macon’s field hockey team has fought their way to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament Championship, only to find, in their way, the Hornets. Each of the last four years, the Yellow Jackets left the final shut out.
How can Randolph-Macon finally overcome the Hornets, and their first ODAC crown in 23 years?
“When I learn that secret, I’ll let you know,” said good-natured head coach Crystal Carper, beginning her 10th season in Ashland. “Right now, we’re doing everything we can to make that happen. These players will keep pushing and giving it everything they’ve got.”
The Yellow Jackets come off an 11-10 campaign (7-2 in ODAC play), which is a deceptive record, as Carper deliberately schedules difficult non-conference games, even early in the season, as is the case with many Randolph-Macon head coaches.
