After capturing the Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament title three straight seasons from 2009 to 2011, Randolph-Macon volleyball watched rival Washington & Lee take the crown each of the past two seasons. Last year was especially disappointing.
Entering the tournament as the second seed, the Yellow Jackets were upset at home in the quarterfinals by a Bridgewater team that changed their game style to stymie, and eliminate, Randolph-Macon.
“We were ranked seventh in the region,” said head coach Bill Rogers, beginning his 13th season at the helm in Ashland. “It was tough, but it was motivating for me. You can see it in the schedule.”
The Yellow Jackets will see nine teams that made the NCAA Tournament on their schedule, which begins Aug. 29 at North Carolina Wesleyan, followed by two matches at the Berry College Invitational in Georgia. One match, against Emory, gives Randolph-Macon the chance to face a national semifinalist from a year ago.
Bookending the schedule is an early November trip to San Antonio to end the regular season facing Trinity (Texas) and Wittenberg, both ranked in the preseason top 15.
