Hanover County is taking nominations for the annual Spirit of Volunteerism Awards, whose winners will be announced next May.

Every year Hanover County residents nominate selfless citizens, families and businesses to be recognized for their community contributions. Nominations require a filled out form and letters of support.

Exceptional volunteers or groups may be nominated for one of seven categories: Spirit of One, Spirit of Youth, Spirit of Dedication, Spirit of Team, Spirit of Family, Spirit of Inspiration, and Commitment to Community.

Award recipients receive $250 from their category sponsor to the organization indicated on their nomination form. Each award recipient is also nominated for the statewide Governor’s Community Service and Volunteerism Awards.

According to Lisa Adkins, program coordinator of the Hanover County Department of Community Resources, as many as 70 nominations are made each year.

“Hanover is so generous with volunteering,” Adkins said. “There are even more people who do amazing things who aren’t nominated.”

Winners will be announced at the Spirit of Volunteerism celebration in the Hanover High School auditorium May 16, 2017, from 7 to 9 p.m.
