The Richmond Bluegrass Marathon Jam, a special event where local music fans of all ages gather each year to hear and play music with the goal of raising money to support the Richmond Fisher House, will take place Feb. 23 at the Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen (www.artsglenallen.com).
Fisher House is a home away from home for the families of veterans and active duty soldiers recuperating at Richmond’s McGuire Veterans Medical Center.
Twenty regional bluegrass bands, including Jackass Flats, Slack Family Band, River City Band, The Green Boys and East of Afton, will play from noon to midnight at the free event. Barbecue and local beverages will be available throughout the day.
The event is designed to raise money for military families, and although there is no charge to get in the door, fans are encouraged to make tax-deductible donations to the Richmond Fisher House at the event or online (www.richmondfisherhouse/donate.org). Over the past three years, the event has raised nearly $25,000.
Musicians are encouraged to bring their instruments and pick with some new or old friends. Each year in the past, more than 1,500 people have attended, and organizers are predicting even greater crowds this year.
The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen is located near I-295 and I-95 with plenty of free parking.
