Work is set to begin Feb. 18 on a project to relocate the intersection of Routes 33 and 54 in Montpelier.
According to the Virginia Department of Transportation, during the first phase of the project, which is expected to last until about April, the impact on drivers will be minimal with periodic lane closures. In the final phase, which will last until Nov. 18, drivers can expect lane closures as needed to make lane realignments. In both phases, flaggers will be present to direct the flow of traffic.
The project will shift Route 33 to the east and add turn lanes. This will allow motorists on Route 33 to have through travel access to continue on Route 33 or enter Route 54. In addition, the intersection will be realigned to accommodate this new access. Once the new access is built, cul-de-sacs will be constructed on the existing Route 33 and Route 54 near the intersection. Also, turn lanes will be constructed to improve traffic flow through the intersection.
